With Terence Stamp playing Valorum in the movie it really made me want to read more about his character. As I recall, the book also provides a good introduction to some of the factions we later see in Episode II.

As for The Phantom Menace novel, I liked the "deleted" scenes concentrated in the beginning on Tatooine and I liked how it was explained that Anakin blew up the Trade Federation Control Ship, but otherwise I recall the writing being amateurish. This was a huge shock to me considering Terry Brooks is such a giant in Fantasy literature. Did you read Cloak of Deception, Campbell? I read this right before I read Episode I and I REALLY understood things a lot better which helped me enjoy reading the novel quite a bit. What didn't you like about it?
