This droid thing makes sense... if you think about it in the right way (or ask a Jawa). A young boy makes a driod in Ep 1. True, but what does "make" mean? Surely he did not smelt and forge the metal parts. Surely he did not photo-etch the chips and CPUs, himself. Surely he did not speak the MILLIONS of languages into his memory banks. I am sure we are not meant to think he did all this (or whatever the GFFA equivalent is).

No. What Ani DID DO is find parts in a junkyard and fit them together. It is like "building" your own PC. It is not really that hard at all. All the parts are made to fit together. Not to say it is NOTHING. I would be impressed with a 10 year old that could do it, but not think he was a genius, just good that's all. I have made working PCs from piles of "junk". I know people that have made working cars from junkyard parts. These things can be done.

Now, keep in mind that Lucas is a gear-head. He loves car culture. I think...

Quick thought...

In TPM we see that a young boy can build an intricate droid in 3PO. Then, we see that the majority of the droid army pales in comparison to the droid that a boy can make. Why would the simple battle droids even exist? In fact, the Trade Federation must know that the battle droids are inferior and therefore create destroyer droids and super battle droids. If they've gone as far to create better droids, why continue using the simplistic regular battle droids?

Hmmm....

It's early to start planning, but I'd definitely like to get a group together to see each of these new releases. I even told my dad in Kentucky that I'd like to make sure we see it together. I haven't seen Star Wars on the big screen with him since 1983.

And since we're already talking in the TPM thread, I'll mention that last week's The Citadel episode of The Clone Wars featured echoes of Episode I. Not only does it heavily feature Jedi Master Even Piell but when a Battle Droid is in an exploding hallway it gets blown away just like the famous Droid Control Ship explosion in the first prequel (and its trailer). There's a Destroyer Droid that has a nice quick scene as well.

This evening I just thoroughly enjoyed a viewing of The Phantom Menace with my wife. She's not a fan of the Saga, but I think she was more impressed with it than usual tonight. TPM was her favorite- or possibly least disliked- episode in the past, partly because she enjoys seeing a kids perspective in a movie.

For me it was the first time in a long time where I really paid attention and watched the movie in one sitting. I always try to watch the movie when we have our Episodes of the Month, but I absorbed more and remembered more this time. I often just listen to TV through the rinky-dink TV speakers but this time I fired up the ProLogic and ricked annoying my neighbors. That helped, and I found that my upconveting BD player made the DVD look quite good for probably 80% of the movie. Of notable exception is the daylight scene in the Jedi Council when Qui-Gon reveals that he's encountered a vergence. There was so much grain and even black spots in the background it almost...

I have to admit, I'm glad that the prevailing thought out of Lucasfilm currently is that the Yoda from Empire is the Yoda to emulate. They've always claimed they won't paste a digital Yoda over Frank Oz's OT performance.

Did anyone attend the Ep. I screening at Celebration V? I had intended to go in hopes of seeing the "new" digital Yoda, but I couldn't get away. I also had heard rumors that it was going to be the version screened at earlier Celebrations, so I wasn't too disappointed. Assuming that was the case I guess we'll just have to wait to see it on next year's Blu-Ray.

Meh. I still think it's funny. Just b/c I love SW doesn't mean I need to love everything about it or every movie or show. For example, I can't stomach the new cartoons either. As for people spending so much time on talking about what they don't like, it is b/c they are passionate about the lore of the franchise and absolutely dislike that to them, it was ruined. We spend just as much time (and much more) talking about what we love about the movies. Comedians have built very successful careers around negative jokes - Lewis Black and Dennis Leary come to mind. Just think about Leno's monologue - is there anything positive that is included in his jokes - which is what this review is - a long narrative joke.

In any event, this guy's review of Avatar was pretty funny too. And yes, I liked that review as well and I even love that movie. Sense...

I just hate when people spend so much time on things they dislike. I mean, if I spent an hour telling you how much I don't like anchovies anyone would think I went on for 59 minutes too long.
I thought the 70 minutes of bile review had some worthwhile comments, but as a whole it's a mess. It's like listening to some political commentator that says a reasonable thing here and there but mires it in so much random opinion that it's not worth sifting. I generally found the review to be a waste of time but if someone wrote down all the real arguments that the reviewer brought up I'd be interested in discussing them. For example, I'm happy to debate whether it was a good idea for Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan to split up when sneaking on the TF's warships, but I don't want to hear that bizarre "comedian's" voice or the little vignettes about rape and filth ever again.
