Someone from out-of-town asked me where I get toys around Orlando. I recommended Bad Apple Comics (by the Florida Mall) and Once Upon a Toy (at Downtown Disney) for interesting choices. I've heard good things about ACME up in Longwood but it's been years since I stopped in.In thinking about this I realized how many places have disappeared over the last decade: Sci-Fi World, Whiz-Bang, FAO Schwartz.... No wonder most of my toy runs end up at Target and Wal-mart. Any other suggestions? Where...

Dude, you just had a Toys 'R Us open near you? I thought they were all closing. Interesting.

Very cool to hear that a comic shop will be opening so close to you. It's such a treat to be able to take a quick five minute drive and pick up your comics for the week. Mine is about ten minutes away and that's not too bad either, so you should enjoy that.

My neighborhood got a Toys R Us a couple of months back and now we're finally getting a comic store. The new Coliseum of Comics newsletter says,

For those of you that we hadn't already told, the new store is going to be right next to the Target near the Mall at Millenia. Once we start prepping and moving we'll give you an exact address.
This is great news for me. Though I'm resolving to collect much slower this year than in years past, the idea of having a really close comic shop is exciting.

A quick Google search showed me something listed in Leesburg, too, so I don't know what's going on. I can tell you that Shawn, the owner/manager of the OBT Bad Apple is a nice guy to deal with and he also will sell your own things on eBay or in the store on commission.

Where do you get your collectibles locally? Obviously there are the department stores, Target, Walmart, etc. But what other places in our area would you recommend? I like Bad Apple for inexpensive older modern toys. Acme Comics Superstore is a drive for me, but has a spectacular selection. Coliseum of Comics is a chain, but has a good variety of items. Sci-Fi City is on the East side of town so I rarely get over there. It's also gamer-focussed so there's not always a lot for me to find, though it is giant and has a beautiful display of giant Capital Ships. A Comic Shop has a really enthusiastic crew that is all about comics. They basically don't have toys, but the store is something to see and they even rent graphic novels and trade paperbacks.

Has anybody ever been to Docking Bay Ninety Four Comics on Orange Avenue? I've heard of it, but I don't know anything about it.

We were talking about Notable and Notorious somewhere up the thread. I finally got to visit the store on Visitor's Circle and have to say it looks like a recipe for failure. Maybe they do Ebay business or they make a living from the autographs, but frankly I found their store to be quite boring. They are chock full of a whole lot of nothing. As for SW stuff, they maybe had a dozen SW pieces, half of which are the MR lightsabers.

Elsewhere Jessie asked where Sharon and I find our collectibles. For my part, I make regular stops at a Target and a Wal-mart for the new Hasbro items. I try to check a toy aisle 2-3 times a week. If I'm down Disney way I'll stop in Once Upon a Toy (Downtown Disney) where you can find the occasional exclusive. When new Gentle Giant stuff is making it's rounds I often peek into Bad Apple Comics, and when I'm there I walk across the street and scope out Toys R Us. Kay-Bee and K-Mart are also places for the Hasbro fare but the finds are sparse from my experience, and the prices are always higher.

One note, the comic shops can be competitive on the statues and other items they buy from distributors, but typically you'll pay too much for an action figure in these places as most often they acquired those pieces from one of the retailers you and I shop in.

In the past six months I've broken down and started ordering from Entertainment Earth and I've always had luck with...
