Just watched The Smurfs. I think it's safe to say that if you liked The Chipmunks movies, you'd like this. I don't fall into that camp, so I found it pretty lame. I liked both franchises as a kid, so this would be a good opportunity for me to say these movies have ruined Alvin and Smurfs for me (ala the Prequel haters). Fortunately, I still have good memories of little me enjoying them (and a few of my Smurfs from the 70s) which will do just fine.

Also saw Crazy Stupid Love this week. While it relies on coincidences like oxygen, I really enjoyed the unpredictability of the story.

I just saw Tower Heist at a preview tonight and was quite surprised that I really enjoyed it. The trailers aren't funny at all and didn't intrigue me. A free ticket drew me in, though, and I'm really glad I saw it. I don't count myself a fan of any of the leads but strangely, the presence of Alan Alda was actually one of my main interests. Believe it or not, there's edge-of-your-seat moments and lots of laughs. Surprisingly good.

Two movies I've watched recently were Limitless and Morning Glory.

Limitless takes a page from the old Travolta fantasy Phenomenon, and makes you imagine the possibilities of really being able to tap into your brain's potential. I was impressed, even though Bradley Cooper comes across like a well-dressed Jamie Kennedy at times.

Morning Glory is a Rachel McAdams movie co-starring Harrison Ford (from Star Wars, loser of the 1977 Best Picture) and Diane Keaton (from Annie Hall, winner of the 1977 Best Picture). Harrison Ford plays the only part he's capable of this decade: cranky Harrison Ford. Surprisingly, some interesting editing and McAdams' spunky Mary Tyler Moore/Meg Ryan amalgam make it a pretty watchable feel-good fluff pic.

I probably expected more out of the new Conan than most people. I was an avid reader of the novels and comics back in the 80's. I enjoyed Arnold's version of the character, but felt they missed the mark. Jason did make a great Conan, but I feel the story fell way short. In fact, pretty sloppy. Maybe a better edit would make this more enjoyable? Will hope for a sequel and some better writing, would like to see Jason get another shot at making the Conan series a great one. For the record, Jason DID make a perfect Conan, the movie was savage and barbaric. The sword work was impressive.

I recently saw Rango and enjoyed it. ILM's animation is superb, really incredible. The story is clever and Rango's appealing. My favorite parts were a brief animated cameo of Hunter S. Thompson (Johnny Depp's character from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) and the Spirit of the West. I was totally surprised that that was not who I thought it was. I don't even want to name the obvious choice of who I thought it was because I'd rather keep the surprise for anyone that sees the movie.

Pin and I saw Captain America this afternoon and thought it was great. Nothing against the movie, but seeing it in 3D actually pulled me out of the movie and I'd recommend you save your money and see it in 2D. Personally, the 3D aspect of it made it feel like I was inside a film set not watching something that may have occurred in the 1940s. Maybe it was just me, but my wife didn't get anything out of that part either, though her problem is the annoyance of having to wear the glasses.

It was nice to see a colorful superhero not be translated into a leather- or rubber-clad meanie. In fact, it even was very clever the way they handled his costumes over the months that the movie covers. I was a comic fanatic in the 80s but only had a few of Cap's comics back then. So I don't think I've ever been more impressed with him than now. Like Tobey McGuire's Spidey, Cap's got a good heart and a strong will, making for a very good role model and one...

Movies I've seen recently:
Tangled - Interesting to see a classic Disney style of drawing applied to a fully CGI movie. I wouldn't say this is a classic, but it was entertaining.

The Apple Dumpling Gang - This didn't hold up as well as when I saw it in the 1970s. Don Knotts and Tim Conway had a funny scene or two, but the smarmy silliness of Bill Bixby's scoundrel and a town full of stereotypes didn't hold my interest. The Vault Disney features on the DVD were far better than the movie.

I'll probably go see the new Transformers in the theater. I'd like to see Thor, Rio, Pirates and I'm sure a few others, but the reality is that I do not get many opportunities to go on "date nights", and the cost is prohibitive before babysitting.
