On the opposite end of the spectrum, I am finally moving again on my reading of Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor. The real reason I got mired in it was that I was reading other things and busy in my life, but the book does have a somewhat slower midsection. The pace is literally slowed so much that our hero is buried in stone. Imagine "Han Solo and the Shadows of the Empire," the adventures of Han as he's frozen in carbonite during the adventures between ESB and RotJ.

Anyhow, I'm now back on track and the pace has picked up thoroughly. Looking forward to finishing this one.

Wednesday I received Outcast from the library and am considering it for my next book after 'Shadows of Mindor.' I'll be reading reviews to check it out, but it's set in an era I don't usually delve in: post-NJO.

I read the MF book because of the promise that there was lots of stories about the early history of the Falcon, which was very true. The frame story concerns life post-NJO for Han and Leia, but most of the book occurs in the past, previous to Han's ownership of the freighter. For some reason I have no interest in reading the NJO. Partly, it may be because it's nice to rule out a huge chunk of history so I can focus on the parts that interest me more. I understand your point that it was a lot of fun to read a large cycle from start to finish, but I already have too much on my "To Read" list.

Still slowly working on Shadows of Mindor. There are sections of the book that describe being stuck in rock and mired in mental battles with something darker than the dark side and I find it interminably boring. It's like I'm actually going through the tribulations described in the book and I get frustrated and it's a battle not to put the book down. I really like parts of this book, but these sections are some of the dullest reading I've sat through in years. It's so esoteric that it makes the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey seem literal and crystal clear.

If I were to repeat that paragraph in different words and phrases for another 50 paragraphs or so you might get the gist of what I'm feeling.

I finally finished Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor!! Overall it was a pretty good book with some things you don't see in other Star Wars novels. One of the main conceits is that the perspective of the galaxy is based on the holo-"movies" told about the heroes. This is an interesting idea and actually can be used to help you accept why different stories don't always jive with eachother. Another really interesting part is that there are several short sections told from the perspective of Artoo. These are some of my favorite parts, considering that's a tough thing to achieve. However, a big part of why I got bogged down several times are the chapters that deal with the ultimate Dark- a new esoteric concept that is explained in long boring pages of mixed metaphors. Ugh.
