Well I haven't been to a new movie since Indy 4 . I wanted to see Terminator and the new Star Trek. I am not at all excited about Transformers 2 ( mostly
because of what I've heard from the script so far). Over the weekend I saw The Last Mimzy at my sister's house and I really enjoyed it. I think this
movie is a few years old . This is the kind of movie that I just can enjoy watching because at no point does it become obnoxious or annoying. I would call this
a family friendly sci-fi and would highly recommend it as a mid-week rental .

Since there's quite a few but only a few I can think of at the moment I'm just gonna give a quick comment on:
Race to Witch Mountain - Thought it was a good update (and sequel?) to the original films. Watchmen - Will have to see it again.....I think I missed a little but it wasn't too bad. I haven't read the graphic novel (?) it was based on so no comparisons there. 17 Again - Obviously family oriented (I don't say teen) Light Comedy. Zac Efron was better than I expected and I do like Matthew Perry. An Okay movie even if not for the SW props (I mentioned this in the SW media ref thread) Grey Gardens - Jessica Lange/Drew Barrymore. Interesting film to me. Barrymore overacts a bit but then her character is self deluded and very caricturish to begin. Lange is so subtle but just steals everything. Not sure if I mentioned before but 1408 with John Cusack was pretty good. The best Stephen King film I think ever done (he wrote this as a screenplay direct for screen). It wasn't scary scary but creeped me in ways I didn't expect. |

My more recent movies include Transformers Revenge of the Fallen (it's not Transformers 2 people :P), all the Harry Potter movies on DVD (still have to see
the latest one) and a few other kid type movies with my girls.

Same here. But I also have to throw in "Night At The Musem 2" and "Australia."

I should have clarified that in the horror genre. Though The Shining is still a favorite.
All Three films you mention are excellent films but I would classify as dramas or thrillers at most. Stand by Me is also a personal favorite still as well. |

Went and saw District 9 last night with David. At first, I wasn't so sure that I liked the movie, but the longer I thought about it today, the
more I realized that I did like it very much. It was just so different than anything I've ever seen and the special effects were just insane. This movie
was made on a thirty million dollar budget. I'm going to just go out on a limb here and say that they'll recoup what they spent making it.

I watched Corpse Bride for the first time the other night. Interesting movie, well animated. Not sure if I'd buy it or watch it again and again, but it was
worth watching. I totally forgot Johnny Depp was doing the lead male voice until about half way through the film.
I don't know what possessed me to watch it...perhaps just hearing about it for years, but I made the horrible mistake of watching the Rocky Horror Picture Show last week. I knew nothing of the film other than the title before watching it. Really, the only reason I watched it was because a young Susan Sarandon is in it. I didn't understand it at all, it made no sense and I can't believe people still watch this film today with live audience participation.

I've being seeing a lot and it's difficult to keep up but here's a few and some brief personal comments.
Up - This is a little more mature for pixar and I think that is part of what I enjoyed. But it tells a nice little story and is still fun. One I could see more frequently. 9 - The different personalities of the characters were used well, especially when you consider their creation (I'm not going to spoil anything). It is again a more mature production but unlike Up or Wall-E humor is a little more sparing. Still a great watch. Julie & Julia - Meryl Streep is one of my favorite actresses and she doesn't disappoint here. Even if the physical resemblance is not quite exact, the spirit of Julia Child is, especially for anyone who's watched any earlier docs about Child's or watched her show (and yes I have both.) The other side of the story, the Julie side, is much more humorous and touching as she grows through her trials and tribulations of her project. Moon - (just Moon, not blue, new or harvest, just Moon) It is slowly paced and there is really only one actor (Sam Rockwell) who does a great job at...... no spoilers. Interesting take on the process of a character discovering himself. This movie is reminiscent of films like 2001: A Space Odyssey or Mission to Mars. Zombieland - This was the funniest of all the movies. The zombie genre, scary or funny, is pretty played out but this was still funny to watch and I could see again. District 9 - Like Chris I wasn't sure whether I liked it or not at first but it grew on me. The story and fx are good. The most interesting facet of this movie, I later learned, is it's development from a short film by the director about true circumstances during South African apartheid and filmed in actual violence ridden ghetto areas of Johannesburg. Carriers - Not too bad but not great. A slightly different take on the end of humankind. Slower paced |

Eofer Draijonsai wrote: I watched Julie and Julia and Moon last year on airline flights. I was a little delirious for Moon, which made it even more surreal. It fits right in with 2001 and Solaris for me. I can't compare it to Mission to Mars because I dislike that movie so much. Need to see a Mars movie? See Red Planet instead. I enjoyed Julie and Julia and having seen Julia Child on TV regularly as a kid made me appreciate Meryl Streep's performance all the more. You'd never know that Meryl Streep was probably a head shorter than Child. I almost bought District 9 the other day while looking for BDs but put it off. This is one the movies I'm most wanting to see along with Up In the Air and The Men Who Stare At Goats. I haven't seen 9 but I want to. I did see Coraline and was more entertained than I expected. It's pretty creepy. I like UP in the theater but I don't want to revisit it as much as some Pixar movies. I found it very touching, but at times so real and sad that it was disturbing. -Campbell Help the SWGFA by buying through Amazon. |

I haven't been watching much this year. I finally saw Avatar for the first time at my sister's house. What is the big freakin deal? I mean it is a cool movie but the press could calm down a little. I think every new epic adventure will break the box office record because the world wide movie audience is growing faster than ever.
I really liked Unbreakable ,staring Bruce Willis, and Panic Room with Jody Foster. Those were both on TV I remember seeing Batman Dark Knight and Indy 4 in the theater. I did not go to the theater again until we saw Iron Man 2. It is now one of my favorites. The Black Widow fight scene is hard to watch on the big screen. It is like the film frames can't keep up with the motion . I couldn't tell if that was caused by digital filming , digital compositing or problems transferring digital info onto reel film. |

whendroidsfly wrote:I completely agree with you on Avatar. I liked it, but it did not blow my mind like it did for most of the vocal public. Reminds me of a funny line from a recent episode of the tv show Community. A character says, "Will someone back me up if I say this is ridiculous or is this going to be another Avatar situation?" Everyone else in the group starts chattering about how Avatar was the best thing to happen to movies since, well movies. And the same thing happens to me at work every few weeks. There's something in that movie that's moving most of the viewers beyond reason. As for Unbreakable, I really like that one. Even though you can go the majority of the movie not realizing that you're watching a comic book-style movie it's one of the best movies in the genre. I thought Iron Man 2 was very entertaining. The Black Widow fight scene seemed pretty incongruous with the rest of the movie, but it was funny when measured against the same time frame by the driver, Happy. I assume the process used for Black Widow (as seen in Saving Private Ryan and many war movies since) is typically a tool to disorient the viewer by appearing more chaotic, and in this case, more exciting. Between that and the editing, I don't think Scarlett Johansson really did much skilled fighting; it looked more like posing. -Campbell Help the SWGFA by buying through Amazon. |

NO June movies for me. It's hard to type with all these tears in my eyes. Maybe I'll feel better if I go see The Last Airbender with my nephews. The most exciting thing about it to me is that it really looks like the cartoon has come to life. This is what I had hoped for in Transformers and GiJoe but Paramount let me down big time ( more tears ).
I didn't even see a movie on TV in June . That's weird. |
