Jess and I are planning to go see the new Potter flick on tomorrow. Probably a before 6pm showing at Winter Park Village or Fashion Square. Depending on who
all would be interested we may be able to change to later. Give one of us a call.

Have fun guys! I have to work at 8pm, and I've not seen the last two Potter pix, but I'd love to see you two.
Here's a funny clip of Patton Oswalt describing your choice of movies. |

I didn't intend to write a review of the film just to invite but....
I did enjoy the movie very much but being the longest book to date. 870 pages (don't know the the page count for the new one coming out) it was difficult to translate so much into 2 hours 18 mins. I missed more scenes from the book than previous films, especially leading into the climatic fight scenes, though I fully accept the deletions and alterations considering the effort made to maintain the central storyline. The youngs actors are definitely improving (now they have only two more to go). sadly with the ever increasing number of characters I miss also seeing more of some of the established support cast. Though we did get to see a little more of some than the last film. This didn't show as much visual style as the previous two but was much more dedicated to getting the story and setting up for the next films. In relation to the other Potter films, I'd give this 4 out of 5 stars. |

I agree with your review. I haven't read the books yet (hate to ruin a good film thinking about what they left out) so I recently started reading the books and am enjoying them. But I really liked this movie and look forward to the next two. I agree that I wanted more time with the supporting characters but I thought they moved the story forward well without making a 3 hour long movie. And the young stars have really grown with their roles and do quite well.

I finally saw this movie. I really liked it, probably my second favorite after Azkaban. It did suffer a little in the translation from book to screen, but I think the essentials were there. Having just finished reading the final HP book, I can't fathom how that translation will fare. And yet, I eagerly anticipate seeing some of the book on the big screen!

I won't get into a Deahly Hallows discussion, though I'd love some thoughts but it will be interesting to see how they fit it to film. I do hope it will be longer to say goodbye.

I would think they'd fit as much as possible of the last book into the last movie, since it will be the last one. (She says, not having gotten to that book yet....)

Actually the last book will be made into two parts to make sure they fit as much as possible in it.

Well I'm gonna start this as I'm curious to others reactions. I will give a SPOILER alert! Also an Alert on how this post will show how hopelessly
geeky I am.
For all the things I did like.....there are that many things more that I disliked. This is the first film where I really saw the younger actors acting and doing well. It's the only credit I'll give the director. Michael Gambon steals the show though which is unfortunate it's the most he'll get to do. I did like the train scene with Draco and the alteration of Luna finding Harry was amusing. I was glad they showed the Weasley Bros. shop I loved the the quidditch scenes.which have to be the most exciting of all the films and more "real" to the idea of how fast and rough the game seems it should be to me. Ron's goal saving shots are still great without knowing that background of why they are special. I liked the way the Ron-Lavender Brown storyline was presented. It was cut down but I definitely didn't lose anything from the book. My favourite scenes in the movie are the Tom Riddle flashbacks. The two actors portraying him were brilliant. Those scenes were portrayed very well. What I didn't like.... I didn't like the opening scene..... It just did nothing for me and didn't make sense. The book's opening at the Dursley's could have been condensed, better serve the film and been entertaining. That scene kinda set the tone of my expectations for the film (which I had kept very much to a minimum) I really don't like the whole chase scene in the cornfield and the burning of the burrow. I just can't express how disappointed I am. That just ended up being a waste of time and no follow up. They just destroyed the Weasley home (which in the context of the Potter books probably couldn't be rebuilt) Now what's it gonna look like in the next film. To waste the time they could have at least followed events of the book with Bill and Fleur and such. Though I liked how the Ron-Lavender storyline was presented I feel they concentrated on that more than the mystery of Draco and the Room of Requirement. That is a much more important sub story of this book. The attention paid to Harry's obsession with Draco's activities is cut to one two second shot of Harry looking at the marauder's map. The Harry-Draco duel was okay but could have been so much better and more dramatic. I didn't like the scene of Ginny hiding the potions book in the RoR and the kiss. The Finding the Horcrux scene was good but I really really missed one single line of dialogue. "I'm not worried Harry, I am with you." Completely cutting the death eater's fight in Hogwart's? no comment. I am terribly disappointed in the alteration of Dumbledore's death scene. It was very Un-dramatic not having Harry hidden beneath the cloak in a full body bind knowing Dumbledore scuttled his chances by cursing Harry. And under any circumstances would Dumbledore have let Draco disarm him the way they presented. And where was the Invisibility cloak anywhere when he wore it more in this book than any other. Not Once. The raised wand tribute to Dumbledore was cheesy. Period. They could have done a brief condensed funeral scene ending with Harry Ron and Hermione's talk Though there were many many light funny moments in this book, the overtones were much darker which I don't think the writer or director knew how to balance. It was choppy and I feel they tried to play up the lighter feel and love stories, minimizing the dark, serious events. I am actually concerned about how the last book (two films) is going to be treated being the same writer and director. The composer of the last two films is stepping away from the job but he's slipped in an interview suggesting John Williams return to close the score since he started with the first film (That would be good) Anyway there's my long fit over this movie which I'm sure I've missed some point or another. |

This is about the books, but I don't think it's worth starting a new thread...
Can't believe it, but hungering for some English while on my trip to Thailand I found a copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in my wife's old house. I'm a slow reader and was very distracted once we found a regular internet connection, but this evening I finished it and have to say I really, really enjoyed it. I see why people like Russ have been selling the quality of writing and I have to admit that I laughed out loud many times and got cold-chills during end scenes with Dumbledore and Hagrid. Very good stuff. I'm trying to get Pin to start it, but she has little interest. I'll definitely be reading Chamber of Secrets soon (they gave me a copy of that, too) maybe even during a very long layover in Atlanta on Sunday. -Campbell

The Harry Potter Books | #12 | ||

Just be warned that as the writing improves through the books so does their length. I'm kinda looking forwarding to rereading all 7 books prior to the
release of the next film, a practice I began with the 2nd film (to reread all books up to that film.)
Maybe C if we read the twilight books we can convince Pin to read the Potter series. |

It'll be a while before I crack open a Twilight book, but I guess I'll never say never. Our friend Melanie has read them all (and rereads the Potters
like you, Russ) and says that the writing is far better in the JK Rowling stuff. I just finished Chamber of Secrets and will start Prisoner of Azkaban this
week.
I have a strange experience with the movies that is not deterring me from reading the books. As of last month I had seen the first film, thought I'd seen the 2nd one, and had reluctantly seen the 5th one (Order of the Phoenix). On the plane from Seoul last week I watched Half-Blood Prince and since I've gotten back to the States I've re-watched the first movie. Having read the first book I can say I would not recommend the movie. It loses so much from the book and the special effects are so dodgy that I simply like it as an appendix to the book. It's very nice to be able to access the Harry Potter wiki and see characters and costumes and creatures that I've been reading about. I'm a very slow reader so I could very well get to the mammoth Goblet of Fire (the 4th) and get bogged down or distracted. However, at this point I'm borrowing free time from my internet and TV usage to be able to spend time reading, and that's a good feeling. I'm going over to Melanie's this afternoon partly to discuss this stuff and look forward to seeing you, Russ, and others like Laura to discuss my late-blooming appreciation for The Boy Who Lived. -Campbell

I'm curious to find out the difference between the UK and US versions of the books. I read the UK first two books, but here on out will probably find
American versions. Obviously the Philosopher's Stone became the Sorceror's Stone, but beyond that I'm told that spelling and various words were
changed. I hope it doesn't lose too much British flavour as that's been appealing in my first two years at Hogwart's.

Just finished The Prisoner of Azkaban. Pin and I are going to watch the movie tonight. I've got two questions.
First, by the end of the book we learn that Sirius Black is a good guy. He sent Harry the Firebolt broom so he'd clearly been watching Harry for some time. How is it that Ron woke one night to see Black holding a knife through the torn hangings of Ron's four-poster bed? I'm sure there's a simple answer, but that the only of Black's actions that I can't account for. Second, and this is not plot-worthy, but something I've thought of since the first book. Harry receives many gifts on holidays and when he needs them, but he rarely seems to give things away. Considering his vast fortune and the needs of the Weasleys it seems he would try to help them in their financial struggles. One explanation would be that he is a child and even if he thought to do so the Weasleys might refuse it. However, I don't even recall Harry giving a single Christmas or birthday present, though since he learned he was a wizard many people from Sirius to Hagrid have given him extensive gifts. -Campbell

Just finished The Goblet of Fire.
Has anyone read the Harry Potter prequel that was created for charity? It's so short it barely whets the appetite, but it does address my desire to learn more about James Potter and Sirius Black. -Campbell

Whats the matter. You don't want the set of Dragons from the first task to go with your SW collection. LOL.

As a matter of fact, I'm particularly not interested in the dragon items. If I had a gift certificate or something (well, I'd still get Indiana Jones
stuff first, but...) I'd probably go for the wands. I don't understand why they made so many projects for the First Task but I imagine it's because
the Noble Collection got into HP around the 4th movie.
