I'd like to get some opinions on the following statement: "It's because of things like the Expanded Universe that make the phrase "Star Wars Is Forever" so true." I know there are varying opinions on why Star Wars is indeed forever, but once I hear some feedback from you guys on this topic, I'll tell you why I asked. Posts: 6068 Fri, Jan 9, 2009 9:40 PM Consul - Orlando System Baron Admin	I think it's probably true, and I think it's what Kenner had in mind when they thought up the slogan. My actual opinion, and it's very related, is that SW is going to appeal to many generations well into the future. My general reason for loving Star Wars has been its depth. In every scene there are a dozen stories that aren't explained. Many of these details have been and will be explored in the EU. Now that there is such an EU machine I think it's important to pick and choose what I want to include in "Campbell canon." It's like the collectibles scene. In the early 90s some of us were buying very poorly designed Bend-Ems because we wanted to capture the magic of Star Wars in a tangible form. Then in the mid 90s Star Wars collectibles began a renaissance that endures today. It's far better now because the grand majority of us cannot afford to acquire the vast selection so you have to settle for those things that most strike a chord. What I personally take away from Star Wars is unique to me, and is much more important than what someone else thinks. Just as your opinion lives in you and your reality. Star Wars is Forever because it provides such a universal vehicle for us all to ride and yet still go to our individual destinations.

The reason I asked about this is because I made that statement at Disney last year among a large group of people and I think my reasoning behind it was mistaken by many. I was shot down rather quickly by this one gentleman who stated that I was absolutely incorrect. He was, of course, an OT purist. My reason behind the statement was meant like this: Star Wars is forever because of the Expanded Universe. It's forever because there will always be someone writing a novel, comic-book or making a video game based on the EU. The movies are done and we still have The Clone Wars and the live action TV series to come which is considered EU. Not that the movies aren't enough to keep fandom going for the rest of our lives, but other generations will come and be exposed to the newest form of Star Wars which will always be whatever EU material is being released at that time. I thank the maker for the EU. It brings so many different types of fans into the mix. There are those, strange as it may sound, who don't care for the OT at all because they were raised on the PT. Of course, these people will be younger as they grew up when the PT was just coming out. For those of us who grew up with the OT, yes it will always take precedence over any other part of Star Wars, but to bash the EU or exclude it from your train of thought is severely cutting yourself off from what could be extremely entertaining and important knowledge. I wasn't going to argue my point with so many people around, but given the chance, I'd love to be able to tell this gentleman exactly what I meant by my statement. It's always kind of bothered me it was left like that. Star Wars is forever because of the EU. Star Wars is forever because of fans like us. Star Wars is forever because...it's Star Wars. Posts: 200 Sun, Jan 11, 2009 1:04 AM	You know you talk about the OT purist, funny thing is I got A LOT of that with Transformers. The G1 purist got REALLY annoying REALLY quick. I guess I can understand where they are coming from as I can for the OT purist, but really I look at them more as being just closed minded about the Star Wars (or Transformers) Universe as a whole. To start I was more into the PT because of its focus on the Jedi and the Jedi Council. Only recently have I gotten into the OT and the characters involved and that was only after I started reading the New Jedi Order. Oddly enough I didn't think much of Luke Skywalker until I got to know more about him in the EU - specifically the New Jedi Order. So I think the EU is essential to the growth of not only the SWU as a whole but for the development or expansion of its characters.

EU is supposed to enhance the galaxy and bring depth as well as life to our favorite galaxy far, far away and all of what I have read thus far has lived up to that for my tastes.. and I have indeed read quite a lot of EU material. Havent read a good Star Wars book/comic in awhile tho.. sad to say.... I used to have "Library Day" with a friend of mine and we'd just sit in quiet and read. Sometimes we'd start a comic series and pass the issues as we read them so the other guy was just one issue behind..... it was cool to share thoughts in person like that and share the looks of amazement or shocked reactions. When you look at Star Wars as a whole.. movies, books, and comics alike... I really see it as an entire history more than individual tidbits. Can you imagine great volumes collecting both print and comics... really big huge tomes ( think that's the word) where you just have all this material collected and in chronological order! JGordon has a "Jedi Temple Library" that rivals the best of them... pert near every dang comic they have done and a BEAUTIFUL set of hardcover books that look amazing when put in order. He'd been convinced that the bookclub hardcovers were the way to go and it really makes all the difference. Waaaaaaaaaaaaay, and I do mean waaaaaaaaaaaay back in they day.. I had a pretty good lib'ary goin' myself but nothing "in the amounts he's talking"--- Its great to have so much rich material to read and enjoy and learn from... now if they'd just get to that Darth Plageus (oh heck SP) novel and some back story on Yoda...... There is still much out there that I havent read but I am really well versed in EU I'd say and I'd read quite a lot over the many years we've been treated to the stuff.

I only wish I had the shelf space to display all of the books and comics I have! Yeah, the Sci-Fi Book Club hardcovers make a big difference when a book only comes out in Paperback. I'd much rather have those sitting next to the First Edition Hardcovers than the little Paperbacks. Unfortunately, that Darth Plagueis book was cancelled. This really made me sad as I was very much looking forward to reading about Sidious' past and how he became the great Sith Lord that he was. I can only imagine that the reason behind the cancellation was due to some type of video game or another yet unplanned storyline regarding this topic. Instead of James Luceno telling the story, perhaps it will be told in another form later on down the road. The EU is just magical in so many ways. It explains things that you probably never even thought to ask and clarifies other things that we might have questioned for years. Often, my favorite parts of the books will tie back into the what I've seen on the movie screen. The Han Solo Trilogy by AC Crispin is wonderful to learn about Han's origins, the Death Star book from last year addresses lots of minutia you see on board the battle station in ANH, and the recent Clone Wars movie adaptation fleshes out the emotions Anakin feels during all three Prequels.

Posts: 1363 Tue, Aug 11, 2009 5:38 PM Administrator Tampa SW Club President Tampa	The EU has been quite the heated topic on recent episodes of the ForceCast. There's all these different levels of what people feel to be real and true to the canonicity of Star Wars. Some feel that unless it came straight from George, it's not part of the true Star Wars. Some feel that no matter what it is, as long as it's published by Lucasfilm Ltd., it's real and thus, part of Star Wars. I'm a little bit in between here. I love the EU. I read all the novels & comics (collect them too) and find the back stories for the less relevant characters to be quite fascinating. There are some video games that I will probably never play and there are plenty of CCG guides and such that I will never read. In my eyes, it just keeps Star Wars new and fresh as the films grow older with time. For some, the films are it and that's fine okay. I do like digging further past the movies though and learning more about the time periods before and after our heroes' time. The movies will always be the focal point of Star Wars and nothing will ever change that for me. I just wish I had more time to devote to studying everything. Posts: 3367 Tue, Aug 11, 2009 11:13 PM Administrator Orlando System President Orlando	I've actually passed out copies of the EU Forcecast to two non-FC listening friends in the last 2 weeks. I have some friends who's only interest in Star Wars is the Expanded Universe. For me, I'm not bothered by the EU, I just reserve the right to only care about what I care about. I have read dozens of EU books, but nowadays I typically stay within the a few years of the The Phantom Menace and not too far after the Battle of Endor. I rarely buy Star Wars comics, but I read the trade paperbacks as my library gets them. For me, canon is The Movies, The Movie Adaptations, and the Radio Dramas of the original trilogy, plus anything I pick up along the way and like. I don't feel tethered to everything EU, but I've certainly enjoyed a great deal of it over the years. Same as Sabacc72 - just a little easier to type. -Campbell
