I had to get a 4' x 8' sheet of Polystyrene hard plastic. I had to cut it in half to get it home. I have to stick the plans on the styrene and cut them perfectly. No mistakes.

Don't cut the comforter! Can't wait to see the progress. Is your goal to make the real R2-D2 or some other astromech? I want a picture of the finished product next to my dog... Artoo.

Well the real one first. I think every builder should start with D2. Then go from there.. R2 is the first droid you see in ANH. Other then C3PO and the other protocal droid behind them.

Cool! I will be curious to watch the progress as well. Have a growing interest in droid building, it seems like a ton of fun. http://www.OrlandoMobileTinting.com |

More from R2 build | #5 | ||
![]() More from my R2D2 Build. This is Todd Bixby. This is his r2. He is helping me out with my build. This is the jig that he made for me.. Things that you can do with a piece of wood. This way i don't really have to move the tool. I can move the plastic and not make a mistake. I just have to measure it out and move the dowel.
![]() Here is the router tool that is fixed to the piece of wood. ![]() Here is my first ring that we cut from the jig. This is the bottom plate of the frame. ![]() A few more frame pieces that we cut out. ![]() Band saw to cut the spacers that go between the frame pieces. ![]() Now that we got all of the pieces cut for the frame we started work on the dome. Here we are taking and labeling all the panel pieces for the dome. ![]() Dome with all of the panels out and labeled. Looks like Swiss cheese. ![]() The inner dome. We had to cut it in half so it could fit in the outer dome flush. ![]() The inner dome cut and marked. You have to cut the inner pie panels to that the outer ones don't fall through. ![]() Cutting out the area of the inner dome to figure out where the periscope will go. So now that i am on my way to getting this droid built. Enjoy the journey that I will take you on. My next step is to glue the frame together.. I will have photos of that soon. |

Are you going for just a display model or fully functional? Fun to watch your updates, thanks for sharing!
I am lurking on the builder boards for now, have to wait until business picks up to become involved. Gonna create a 'work room' for a future build and picture framing projects. http://www.OrlandoMobileTinting.com |

Fully functional. Yahoo groups is a good start.. R2 Builders is the name also on www.astromech.net.

I should make a blog. I post picture here and on Facebook. So that both of my clubs can see it. I know a lot of members from the SWGFA are on facebook. So you will see the pictures twice. Hope that is not a overload?

It's not an overload at all, Aaron! Starting a blog is a great idea as well, I started one on Google. It can help you keep track of your own progress and share with others.
http://www.blogger.com/home And it's official, I am a member of the R2 builders group. It will be a while before I start my R2, but I really enjoy how friendly and active the members are. Need to work on clearing a work area, both for the R2 and for my picture framing equipment. http://www.OrlandoMobileTinting.com |

Aaronb1 wrote:It's not an overload at all to me either, Aaron. I like having it here, partly because it acts like a blog. If you make a blog, post it here. If not, we can even change this thread to be your personal thread (e-mail me if so, there are several options) and you can give out an URL for anyone that's not on these boards. Not only do I hope to welcome some of your fellow Florida members onto these boards, but I maybe you could help us to forge a more official link to your chapter of the Artoo builders. -Campbell Help the SWGFA by buying through Amazon. |

I took a break tonight from building.. I will resume building tomorrow. Due to spending time with wife and there isn't enough light in the garage. Campbell, that would be cool. I am not sure on how to go about it but that would be cool.

R2 building update | #16 | ||
|
Worked on my frame some more.
Ring 2 is glued and set. Ready for the spacer for the third level. Starting to put the spacer on the second ring. I can't believe how fast its coming along. I also can't believe that i am building a R2. Its surreal. I am scouring ring three. Marking the areas that I need to put the spacers and the sholder areas. Stay tuned for more in the future. |

Ring 3 | #17 | ||
|
Here you can see that Ring 3 is in place. This ring had to be cut into three pieces. You will see why in the near future.
Ring 3. The print is still attached so that I know where to put my next material. Its a puzzle. Until next time. |

This is coming along very nicely.
This is the very top ring. Its not glued in yet. That will be for Tuesday. I have a few questions about that ring. I have to consult the pros. This is the last part, I believe. Then the skins go on. then I make the feet and then the dome. After that the electronics. Enjoy. |

I just asked this in the general R2 Building thread, but Aaron, have you decided on a designation for your little R2? How about a paint scheme? Is it to be an R2-D2 or and R2-B2? If you went with an R2-B1* one interesting bit of trivia is that "B" is your second initial and your first initial is "a," the "1"st letter in the alphabet.
Yeah, I know, I think about numbers too often some times. *Here's the R2-B1 from The Phantom Menace:

I think my first one is going to be R2D2. If I get the gusto to build another then it might be a R2B1. I am not sure. Thanks thought for making my own thread. I don't think i will make a blog. If i decide to make this my blog i will contact you. In the meantime, i am good doing it this way, if that is ok?
