I come before the Alliance with this idea. As you all know that we are having a get together on April 17th. I have an idea how we can raise money for charities. We have a raffle and a silent auction. 100% of the money goes to a charity of agreed choice. We sale raffle tickets at 1.00 each or 6 tickets for five dollars. Silent auctions we get some high end prizes donated by members or go to your local comic book stores and see if they can donate something. Maybe Brian can donate some signed books or Tim can donate a drawing. I am in the process of asking Chris Macht for some DVD's. Let discuss this further and see what everyone thinks.

I think it's a great idea, and I'm behind it if we can find prizes. I was thinking about donating my Boba Fett maquette, but I'm not certain. Still might put it up on eBay. I don't know if comic stores would donate. Chris has spoken with Razor's Edge- who has previously sponsored the Tampa Club- and he, Michael at RE, can't justify donating when it's being held at a store that sells the same type of products. It's a conflict of interest.

So.. I haven't heard anything more about my idea. Please anyone let me know what you think. I thing it will be great to raise money for charity and that way we can have that under our SWGFA belt. I got Cris Macht the producer/director to donate a signed copy of The Force Among Us as one of the prizes.

Well done! Assuming we find some other items, what charity do you think we should work for? Alliance Council? Anybody?
My first choice would be for animals or the environment, ideally something that will have a positive impact on Florida. I'm going to do some research at this CharityNavigator.org. -Campbell Help the SWGFA by buying through Amazon. |

This is a great idea, but as Campbell has mentioned, due to this being held in a comic book store, it pretty much cancels out any other store from being involved. If other members want to donate items, that's fantastic. Campbell and I have pretty much given away everything we had now, so it's at the point now where we'd have to start buying things just to give them away. This isn't a bad thing, but it can't always happen.

How would it cancel out any other store from participating? Unless its a conflict of interest.

Aaronb1 wrote:That's just it. A collectibles store isn't going to want to donate items for an event that's being held at a competitors event. Furthermore, the store we are holding the event at isn't going to want the name of the competitors store to be mentioned since they are the ones sponsoring the event and hosting it.

Ok.. I was driving home on thursday and was on the phone with Cris Macht. He is sending me one autographed A Force Among Us DVD with some flyers to pass out about the DVD. There are only a few left and he wants to sell out. I also secured a donation from Tim Procter one or two origianal Star Wars sketchcard. Like I said before i have some autographed carded action figures. I am really good friends with Kevin Graham. He is coming to Florida for vacation next thursday and I will be meeting him on Friday.. I will ask him before if he would like to donate a card for the raffle.

Great work, man! With that kind of dedication I don't know how I can not donate my Boba Fett maquette. [I'm watching one for sale on ebay to see if it brings any money].
To everyone else, Aaron and I have started discussing how best to work this for donations to a charity. Let's say we have what Aaron's listed so far. 1 autographed A Force Among Us DVD 1-2 sketch cards from Tim Procter 1 sketch cards from Kevin Graham Jake Lloyd signed carded action figure Amy Allen signed carded action figure Peter Mayhew signed carded action figure and possibly one more. What do any of you think we could stand to make selling raffle tickets? Aaron suggests $1 each, 6 for $5. I think we're going to have 50-100 guests at our April event, and possibly more. It's had a lot of exposure and we've got at least two talents there signing autographs. I'm asking this because I want to see if it's worth us giving this stuff away for what we stand to gain for donations. -Campbell Help the SWGFA by buying through Amazon. |

These are all great ideas, guys. If we are going to start charging for raffle tickets though, we need to A. have a posted reason for charging and B. all the items will need to be out on display prior to someone paying.

Chris Wyman wrote:Excellent points. My vote is going toward this going to some sort of animal shelter. Ideally I'd say it should be something that benefits the state, but unfortunately The Humane Society and the ASPCA are not directly affiliated with the local shelters. In fact, what I've read suggests that money given to the national organizations largely goes to lobbyists, and of course advertising, trying to change laws for the good of animals. These may be noble efforts, but I'd rather have a direct impact on our local community. Anyone against the April 17th raffle monies going toward the SPCA of Central Florida? Here's one website's breakdown of the group and their funds. Not only do I like supporting local animal causes, but I also have not heard of a Star Wars fan group donating to them. -Campbell Help the SWGFA by buying through Amazon. |

I think that everyone has there own charity ideas and I know it is going to be tough to pick one. I would do it for Make-a-wish Foundation that grants wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses or maybe give it to a needy family in the area that has had a tragedy. We also should come up with one soon so we can advertise it and get it out soon. We could maybe work with some of the members of the 501st and grant a wish for a child in are area, just throwing it out there. I also might be able to come up with something signed too.

Unless anyone else has any other ideas, how about we have a one day poll to decide? Anything can be brought to the table, but as you say, Rich, we really need to decide this soon. I'd say that involving the 501st is not something we should do this late in the game on this particular project.
I'm also a fan of Make-A-Wish (I've done a couple of walks for them and even helped put together a golf tournament for them through work), but my vote's going for the SPCA. There are two sides to the SWGFA supporting Make-a-Wish. It's the sort of thing that the 501st does regularly so it doesn't set us apart, but it also might provide an "in" for us with the 501st. -Campbell Help the SWGFA by buying through Amazon. |

Aaronb1 wrote: Right, but we weren't charging money last time, so keeping the prizes a surprise was okay. I don't see many people giving up money to enter a contest of which they don't know what they could win. We also need to clearly state which charity the funds raised will be going towards as people are checking out the display of prizes. This can often lead to more "donations".
