At Thursday's Celebrating Celebration Steve Sansweet announced next year's release of the Star Wars saga on BD. After Saturday's Main Event, Lucasfilm distributed this press release: SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (August 14, 2010) – Today at Star Wars Celebration V, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment announced that the complete Star Wars Saga will come to Blu-Ray disc with a worldwide release in Fall 2011. The Star Wars Blu-ray Box Set will feature all six live-action Star Wars feature films utilizing the highest possible picture and audio presentation, along with extensive special features – including documentaries, vintage behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, retrospectives and never-before-seen footage from the Lucasfilm archives. "Blu-ray is the absolute best way to experience Star Wars at home – in pristine high definition," said George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars Saga. Posts: 117 Tue, Aug 24, 2010 5:50 PM *Oviedo*	I seem to remember someone saying at CV that it would only be the special edition versions because the prints from the theatrical versions were too deteriorated or something. I could be imagining things. Update: Found this online. I thought I remembered Lucas saying something about the versions Advocates of the Blu-ray disc format should be thrilled that this new incentive to adopt the format is finally arriving, but some Star Wars fanatics will be less than pleased that the controversial Special Editions are the only versions of the original trilogy that will be available. Lucas’s explanation: The original theatrical editions would cost too much to convert to the high definition format. I'm sure we'll get the special editions now with a few extras and then when we hit another anniversary, we'll get another premium package, and so on. It's annoying, yet SW is the only franchise that I've bought over and over, just like the rest of my sucker friends that end up jumping every time Lucas releases them again.

While I know that Lucas changes his mind occasionally, LFL was very specific when the last individually packaged OT movies were released on DVD (in 2006) that they would not be releasing the original versions again. At the time, Sansweet said that they actually were hastily put together* to please the fans but that the unaltered versions were not the versions Lucas wanted to promote. * I specifically remember an interview on The ForceCast with the person that designed the DVD menus for the unaltered movies describing what a rush job he had to do. I wouldn't mind the special edition so much if they didn't replace cantina patrons and add entertainers to Jabba's court. As weird as it is , the New Hope scene with Han talking to Jabba is kind of neat to have. I also like the brief chat between Luke and Biggs.

Consequently, when they added Jabba back, he and poor Greedo say almost the same lines. I'm also not a big fan of Han saying, "Jabba, you're a wonderful human being." While I believe we won't see the unaltered movies in this set, I would love to see a documentary about all the changes that have been made over the years. I don't think he looks all that bad in the DVD version, but the scene goes over the top when Han steps on his tail, completely ruins the scene and veers in to Jar Jar territory. I'm sure they could figure out something to do with his tale, just have him move in a circle as Han walks around him or something like that. I don't mind the wonderful human being comment as much as I did originally. However, due to the scene being subtitled, it would be SO easy to change up what Jabba is saying so as to not pretty much go over exactly what Greedo just did. I do smile every time he talks about frying poor Greedo, though. Good stuff. Overall, if I had the choice, I'd get rid of the scene, but I don't dislike it nearly as much as I do the new Mos Eisley entry. So sad. THIS IS NOT AN EXIT.

However, Chase, if you wish, feel free to create a poll in the Star Wars Polls section. -Campbell I'd like to see them put both, but Lucasfilm was pretty adamant during the marketing campaign of the last Limited Edition DVDs of the OT. They said it just was not financially worth it to clean up the originals and they claim that they don't have all the materials. Whether that's true or not, Lucas consistently says that the Special Editions are his films now. Also, if I'm not mistaken every time he's released a movie since 1997 he's updated it. Even all the Prequels had changes from their theatrical releases less than a year later (in the case of Eps II and III). I look forward to the day that I can cut my own version together picking and choosing between effects and scenes because I- like a lot of others, I suspect- never fully agree with the choices of any particular version. Overall, I suppose I like the SEs better than the originals. However, with the full eps I-VI version you get 3 bonus BDs. I can't imagine not getting all that's there to be had. We can absolutely plan a viewing party for the Blu-ray release!
