Posts: 378 Tue, Dec 20, 2005 2:03 PM Okeechobee	Tags : None Hey everyone. I wanted to write a message and let you all know of something. About a week ago my mom woke up with some back pain and she thought it was nothing. As the day went on it got worse and by 6 pm she was unable to walk. She went to Shands hospital in Gainesville and they found a viral spot on her spine and now she is paralyzed from the waste down. For those that I haven't met, my name is Walt and I live down in Okeechobee. I wanted to let you all know what was going on and I would appreciate your thoughts and prayers. I knew a lady once who called in sick to work one day due to an earache. Two days later she was dead. It's weird how stuff can just sneak up on you. Drink your O.J., kids, and see a doctor often! I hope things get better for your mother, Walt.

Posts: 6068 Tue, Dec 20, 2005 5:51 PM Consul - Orlando System Baron Admin	Walt, you'll be in my thoughts. I know how tough it can be to see your mother go through extremely difficult ailments. Do the doctors have an outlook on whether she might walk again? It's a horrible time of year but at least you're with her. As hard as this all is, her head is where the biggest challenge is. And don't forget to take care of yourself- you'll be of better use to the family if your own headspace is clear. Not trying to be flip, but once in a while it might help you to step away from everything and pop in a Star Wars movie (or any other escapist entertainment you love) for a couple of hours. -Campbell

Ditto on Campbell's advice to take good care of yourself, it's the best thing you can do to make sure you have the internal resources to be there for your mom. And you can get those by going to other friends and family who can support you, you don't have to do it alone. Thank you for sharing this with us. Let me know if there's anything I can do (or just talk) and meantime you and your mom will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Posts: 378 Tue, Dec 27, 2005 8:42 PM Okeechobee	Thanks for you thoughts and concerns. It was a pretty tough time at Christmas and all. She has not gotten any motor skills back yet but everyday she is getting more and more sensation back in her legs, so that is an improvment. Tomorrow she starts at least 2 months of Physical Theorpy and we will see from there. All of the doctors feel she will make almost a full recovery but it will take 6 months or a year. Posts: 378 Fri, Jan 6, 2006 1:12 AM Okeechobee	Hey guys, I went to visit my mom today and for the first time since the virus paralyzed her she was able to move her left leg some. She still has very limited moter skills and none in the right leg. But with the limited mobility that she does have now she can turn herself in bed and as long as she can keep shifting and moving some, that keeps the bedsores away. And that is important because the bedsores can be deadly, that's what Christopher Reaves died of. Thanks again for the continuing prayers and support. So that is a holiday for me. Thanks again for everyone's prayers, thoughts and concerns. Posts: 378 Sat, Feb 11, 2006 4:19 PM Okeechobee	Just a quick update on my mom. I was kind of worried for a while. While she was at the inpatient theropy, she had no improvement in her motor skills. But since she has been home, actually just this week. She has had more improvement than she has had in a month. On Wednesday, she peddled a bike for a few minutes on her own and Thursday, she took 10 steps, with some help. This is the most improvement she has had in months really. If she keeps up this pace, she could be out of the wheelchair in the next 4-6 months and on a walker. Great news!! It was really emotional for me to actually see her taking steps in theropy. Usually it is closed doors, but I was picking her from the rehab center and I arrived early and got to see her walk a little. It was really awesome. Thanks again for the support guys.
