Next time I'll try searching by Star Wars, but I'm thinking that will yield a search result too big for me to search manually.

Well, in order to search LiveJournal by region I have to be a paid member, and I'm not ready to pay the $2/month. I tried a search by interest, using "orlando" as the interest, then doing a "find in page" in my browser for "star [wars]". I found one person with a star wars userpic, currently attending UF. All that took about five minutes.

The time for our attack has come. Orlando has been tapped as a nominee for host-city for Celebration V so we need to power-up by seeking some new members, combining efforts with other Florida fan groups, and organizing ourselves to be more visible to the SW establishment. To this effect, I've created a Facebook group for the OS, made a second Facebook group to campaign for C5 in Orlando, reached out to the Tampa and Daytona fan groups, and e-mailed about 20 of the Meet-up.com users that seek a local Star Wars Meet-up. The Tampa Star Wars Collectors Club is sending it's president, Chris, and possibly a couple of others to our meeting on Wednesday. The Facebook groups are coming along nicely, with the main one hosting photos and allowing for Events to be set up like the Clone Wars screening and the regular meetings. The "Bring Celebration V to Orlando" group has gained more attention with nearly 80 members currently. We're also going to re-affiliate ourselves with TF.n as an official Fan Force. TF.n has definite pull with elements inside Lucasfilm and the latter will look for organized fans in whatever city they choose for C5. It will be good to be partly under their aegis. If you're able to go to the meeting and have an account at the Fanforce boards, please post your intention there as that's what we need to re-activate the FanForce OS page. Also, TF.n graciously listed our Wednesday meeting on their main page yesterday, so hopefully we'll garner some attention from that exposure. If you've got other ideas for growing our community, please post them here or let me know. The more of a network we have the better we look, the more fun we have, and the more resources we'll be able to reach. Lock S-foils in attack position and be thinking about ways to enliven our group! |

Ha, yeah, I don't like them either. In fact, I really regret that TF.n requires you to use their outdated boards to be part of their FanForces. However, I
recognize that they are a giant to which Lucasfilm pays some attention, so I'm hoping to have that badge again.
Anyone have any new ideas to build the Orlando System? |

To appeal to the collector element:
tie in swapping/trading/selling as an event at every meeting. Chris's idea about show n tell sounds like a winner as well. I am also posting links to our groups over on Craig's list, and will post our meetings in their "events" section. Contests & prizes for attendees. SW fans LOVE free stuff, don't we? More frequent/consistant public meetings & outings. People need to see our group to know we exist. Contact our local 501st & Rebel Legion to see what they have happening Keep our forums busy & active so that others will want to participate. OrlandoStarWarsFans web domain name or something that will bring folks to the forums Charity or fundraising event that will allow for networking Campbell, I will be more than happy to assist you as much as I can. Let me know how I can help. http://www.OrlandoMobileTinting.com |

Those are good ideas! Thanks. I brought some swappable items to our last meeting and will continue to do so. Perhaps my McQuarrie concept tradables will join
me next time. The show and tell was by far the best part of the meeting and stimulates conversation and interesty from almost everyone. Good stuff.
Never even thought of CraigsList for this sort of thing- can you be our liaison to that community? I've asked Dale about the 501st, even recently, but he's drummed up no interest at all. Audrey, or anyone that's got a significant connection to the 501st, can you help us out? I brought Star Wars books for the attendees of our last meeting and will try to keep bringing party favors. Dale was awesome about that in the past- his SW miniatures went over really well. Anyone that has items they no longer want- bring them to a meeting! You'll often find happy homes for your excess. The consistency of meetings is great, but it's always been a problem. Russ and I take days off for these meetings, but most people can't or won't prioritize them so historically we've often ended up with very little turn out. This is the main reason that I lose interest in the organizing the Orlando System. Not sure how we can remedy this other than having a larger group- people's lives aren't getting any less busy. I think that's the price we pay for having a bit more mature group. Also, keeping the forums busy is notoriously hard. We can all attest that often there is only one or two people that care to post with any frequency. I know that new members would be much more attracted if they saw more action on here, but we just don't have members that have the time, interest, or sometimes computer access to participate. I have had the same luck with community/charity efforts. If someone else wants to restart that iniative I'll be sure and join. Lastly, one or more additional domain names might be very helpful. I'll get with the master of his many domains, Walter, for some help on that. If anyone has a domain they'd like to sponsor (they cost less than $10 a year) post here or start a thread in this section. |

Now that we've been the Grand Florida Alliance for more than a year, I think it's time to really reach out to other statewide groups that are established. Perhaps we could elect envoys to groups like the 501st and the R2 Builders so that we can practice a little midichlorian-style symbiosis. Not only do I think that the GFA and these groups could benefit, but it just makes sense for fans to get exposure to all the ways we can express our fandom.
We've got Dale as a connection to the 501st, but who else is a member? Aaron, I know you are getting involved with the R2 Builders. Do they have a website? Once we have a website we could link to one another. What other groups are out the that you'd like to see connected to the Grand Florida Alliance? -Campbell

The buzz on the April Event is pretty exciting. I have no doubt that this will be one of our biggest gatherings. The question is, how do we turn as many of these people into regular members? I'd like to see the message boards get some action, but we also need to think about what we want out of a larger community.
I think a proper website is key, but we've had virtually no movement in that area, despite one lead from a developer friend of mine. Ideas? -Campbell

I'm going to probably start attending 501st events as a handler over the summer. we've got tons of 501st members here, so maybe I can get them to get connected with the GFA. And as far as First Coast Jedi Knights is going, I think we can finally get back together during Ancient City Con.

I have actually drummed up people interested in our events but the last event that was held at the comic book store out in Clermont scared a few people away. They assumed that small store would be too small a venue to host so many people so they didn't go. Is there someone else we can all meet that we can have more than 30-50 people attend without them all feeling uncomfortable? Melanie

The way things are working now is that we're having small meetings in casual places (homes, malls, etc.) like the old days then quarterly ones that are huge, like the last two at Heroes Landing where we've averaged about 100 people. Other types of meetings are worth considering if we can find the right venues. I definitely miss the old Orlando System library meetings where we had a proper meeting room, some A/V equipment, and 5-10 people just hanging out in one big discussion. Our Socials are a lot of fun, but they're too big to conduct any business.

As of this time today we've had 69 visitors on the board today. Much of that has probably been because of the announcement of next month's big meeting, but in any case it's really gratifying. Thanks to everybody for coming in!
