SWG was initially a really great game. Players either loved it or hated it depending on their expectation. Then, there are varying points at which the game was wrecked. I say varying, because, depending who you speak with that played the game, there are levels of pain that they stayed through to try to make it work.

1st pain: No storyline continuity. Pretty much no storyline whatsoever. Hey..this is SW..wtf can't I fly in space?
2nd pain: 1st jedi enters the game. The first way you could unlock jedi as a player class was to basically grind your way through every single other class in the game, and use holocrons (farming of which made me very rich in game) to 'foresee which profession would unlock your force sensitivity'. I call this the 'I don't remember Luke ever needing to be a cantina dancer before he was a jedi pain'
3rd pain: Space expansion comes out and somehow makes the game worse. Aka even less storyline continuity
4th pain: 1st re-engineering of the game. SOE realizes that people are leaving in mass and they are left with a pile of crap. Lucas threatens to abolish the game and sends in first wave of people to save it. Result is SWG becomes EQIII: Space.
5th pain: Next expansions focus on planets/quests from the PT, yet the game is set in between ESB and ROTJ
6th pain: SOE abandons hope and complete restructures the game, eliminating most player classes and makes jedi an initial player class, losing all hardcore SWG players and trying to appeal to the 'casual' fan. What follows are now half hour infomercials misleading how the game plays.

I left SWG a couple of times when I was bored with the game. I basically had one character and did everything in the game to do with the exception of being a jedi. I could have played jedi, but refused due to the insta lack of continuity with the storyline.

If you are looking for a rpg, there really isn't any other game besides World of Warcraft. Forget every other game you have ever wanted to play. Once you pick WoW up, you will smash all your other discs to pieces.

I am saying this as I was one of the last hanger ons of both SWG and EQ, despite Brandon egging me on to play WoW. I regret wasting many hours with SWG as it is a steaming pile of horseshit than should have never been released.
