I recently finished the young adult novel SECRETS OF THE JEDI by Jude Watson. A spin-off of her Jedi Apprentice and Jedi Quest series. It's an easy read, and perhaps less sophisticated than some of her other plots, but it made for an interesting read nonetheless. The concept: Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Anakin all have had secret romantic loves, this explores the Kenobi's. Before you write the idea off, it's worth taking a look at how this is handled.

I expect that most of the Jedi had relationships, fleeting or ongoing; lifestyles of the itinerant soldier. I never went for that crap about Jedi being forbidden to love (I think that was played up in the movies to make Anakin's situation worse); they're just not supposed to *possess*. Possession is an illusion, anyway, so there goes the argument against Jedi marriage! Here's a great quote I snagged off a tv show:
"People don't really belong to each other, Joan, no matter what kind of contract they sign. They choose each other every day." -God (as a school hall monitor) to Joan, Joan of Arcadia All that to say, I won't write the idea off (at least until I read the book!). |

That sounds more than reasonable to me. I also think it goes to show how mired in rules the Jedi were at that stage and perhaps one of the man wrongs that needed to be balanced in the Force. At the end of e3 Yoda clearly sees that their methods are not the only way to raise a Jedi- considering his lengthy prominent role in the Jedi affairs one would imagine he has a great deal to mull on Dagobah. (if that's where he ended up, I'm not sure- it wasn't in the movie)

LOL! Smart-ass (can I say that here?)!
And I agree, about the dogmatic and rigid form the Jedi order took before its demise. Love the scene in the book where Mace suggests that the Jedi have in fact created too much *light* in the Force... maybe balance wasn't going to be all they were hoping for! |

Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader came out yesterday. I'll get it once I work my way through the book I'm reading now, Labyrinth of Evil. These, along with the RotS novel appear to make for a very interesting trilogy.

I saw that in my latest SFBC flyer. If you want anything at club prices, let me know and we can combine shipping. I'm getting a lot of promotional emails from them lately, with free or reduced shipping, etc. If you're interested I'll check on the current specials.

How is the Sci-Fi Book Club these days? In my youth I was a member and their editions were junk. Nine times out of ten they were of very low quality, but always readable. I've bought a couple of books in the last few years which I think may be their current style- a bit smaller, but generally of the same quality paper stock and as nice dustjackets as the "real" editions. Do they indicate that they are book club editions these days?
The one SFBC book I wish I had the most is one that's very collectible: The Han Solo Trilogy, by A.C. Crispin, my favorite pre-prequel series. |

You must be talking about their omnibus and special editions? Most of the books I've ordered through them look like the same hardcovers I get at the bookstore. I've never been disappointed with the product, just sometimes the writing.
Alas, the Crispin set doesn't show up when I do a search. I just got another email for $1.99 shipping, if you want anything else. I've been meaning to catch up on SW stuff! |

I knew that Han Solo one would not be available, it's been out of print for a long time. If you're going to place an order I would be interested in getting the Medstar book. It's really low priority, but if you are able to order it with low shipping I'd like to buy it.

Anyone read the Vader book yet? I've noticed that it's been in the top ten NYT best seller list since it's release. So either it's a good book or people are just really starved for Star Wars.

Haven't read it and didn't know that. I'm thinking (and hoping) that indicates that it's good, but it could be this particular subject interests the most readers. I don't think America is starved for Star Wars after the year we've had...

I'm curious about the Vader book. If I do pick that up, it will probably be a "make or break" thing for me in deciding whether I will keep up with any storylines between ROTS and ANH.

Labyrinth of Evil | #13 | ||
|
Effectively part one of the RotS trilogy of books, Labyrinth of Evil's an interesting read. I just finished it today after a long, long time working on it. It starts off a bit rough with a rather boring battle scene involving worms. After that it explores events and perspectives relating to Anakin, Obi-Wan, Dooku, and Grievous. The last third of the book tells the abduction of Palpatine very similarly to v2 of the Clone Wars. Fortunately, while the Ithorian Jedi is present, Luceno spares us that bizarre super-breath episode.

Re: The Desperate Mission | #14

I suppose I'd have to say that Jude Watson is my favorite Star Wars author. Most of her work in the SW Universe has been for the series Jedi Apprentice (adventures of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan), Jedi Quest (adventures of Obi-Wan and Anakin), and now The Last of the Jedi (adventures of Obi-Wan and his terrible, terrible depression). I just finished the first book, The Desperate Mission, from that last series. It's a short Scholastic book (168 pages) but thematically it's on par with most adult SW novels.
The book has a plot about Obi-Wan getting news of a former Jedi Padawan in trouble. Kenobi must decide which is the most important duty- to come to this man's aid or remain on Tatooine. It's set one or two years after the end of RotS and explains some of Obi-Wan's mental state after the loss of Anakin. It also features some conversation with Qui-Gon's ghostless voice and a really pissed off teenage bounty hunter. I have to say, the cover actually made me pass on this book initially. It looks like fan art and is a real step down from the Jedi Apprentice covers that got me started on these books. Interestingly, in the course of this book Obi-Wan is forced to shave off the old beard, has gone prematurely completely grey, and there's no reason to think he used his e2 lightsaber. I can't believe that any of this was considered when the cover was designed. Regardless, it's an easy read and fills in a lot of blanks. I thoroughly look forward to reading the next one. -Campbell |

Sounds like I'm going to have to start reading again! After Jessie mentioned it, it made perfect sense to me that in addition to hanging out in bars on Tatooine, Obi-Wan would have ventured off-planet more than once in the line of duty. Don't know why I didn't think of that before. The prematurely grey thing, I suppose that's why he looks so much more than 20 years older by ANH (well, that and a complete change of actors

Re: The Desperate Mission | #16

I've yet to read Dark Lord, but I have seen a bit of Lord Vader's new mentality in The SW Insider story, "The Two-Edged Sword." Like how The Desparate Mission explores the regret of Obi-Wan Kenobi, this short story examines Vader's mistrust of and disappointment in Palpatine. With the possible exception of his mother, everyone Anakin ever loved has let him down.

Is the Insider what you get when you join Hyperspace? I'm going to have to stop putting that off...
Campbell, I got a new 1.99 shipping email from SFBC and it expires tonight at midnight. Plus I think the buy 2, get 1 deal is still on. So I'm going to order this afternoon, if you think of a second book. If not, I'm sure I can come up with something... |

After Russ, Jessie and I all lusted after this at Borders, I went back and picked it up. Hey, they gave me a 30% off coupon!
New Essential Chronology Naturally, I haven't opened it since. I'm home sick today, so maybe some bedside reading... |

I'm interested in that Chronology. I bought the DK Visual Guide for a similar bundling of the SW EUniverse.
