Re: New Essential Chronology | #21

Walt, I hated Survivor's Quest. Every time I picked it up I wailed "why am I still reading this?!" but of course I had to know what happened! In the end, my favorite characters were the 501st squad members (not including their commander, Fel), and I'm not being sarcastic--they were really cool. Enjoy!

Survivor's Quest / Dark Lord | #22
|
Survivor's Quest is not on my reading list but I bet Walt's reading it in preparation for meeting Mr Z.
I'm getting rolling on Dark Lord: the Rise of Darth Vader- after a slow start, this book is really getting good. It's beginning to really show Vader's resentment of Palpatine. Vader is sympathetic to his former self, and he only feels connected to his troopers. He's frustrated at the sluggishness and poor design of his life support suit and only feels mostly at home in the relative weightlessness of his modified Jedi Starfighter. (Seinar is building him a specialized ship to his specifications.) It will be interesting after I've finished the book to see how it compares to Shadow Hunter (Maul's big solo book). One thing though- does anybody remember the idea that your first sentence should grab the reader? Then the first paragraph should do the same and so on to keep the reader reading. Luceno, though I like his books a lot once I get into them, has begun this and Labyrinth of Evil with some torturously dull beginnings. |

The Subject-Header Line Goes Here | #23

Wow, some very in depth stuff here, especially about Jedi relationship possibilities. That story sounds as blashphemous as "The Last Temptation of Jedi". Although, I just had the funny picture of an old drunk Obi Wan in a casino with his arm around the waist of a scantily clad bimbo.

Well, I just saw Timothy Zahn at FX today, and he is still the nicest author-guy ever. So even though I hated SQ, I'm going to have to read Outbound Flight, which is the prequel to SQ and is being released this Tuesday. Anyways I'm curious enough to know the rest of the story. *sigh*

Here's an interesting little edict from Lucasfilm. Somewhere I heard someone say they thought the new junior adult book series, "Last of the Jedi," wasn't for them because it showed Obi-Wan leaving Tatooine for a mission in the first book (and continued in the second). In this month's Insider, Ms Watson reveals that she was told by Lucasfilm that she could only show Obi-Wan leaving Tattoine once, and it could only be for a short time. Very interesting....

Hmmmm... well i hope that's not so. It makes sense that Obi-Wan would go off-planet as much as any other guy, and maybe more. By ANH, he is pretty well up on galactic goings-on, and I don't think he picked *all* of that up by hanging out in backwater-world bars!

I finally finished James Luceno's Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader. I'd savored it for well over a month because it was too good to rush through. The book tackles so many issues pertaining to the more-machine-than-man in black. It looks through the fundamental stresses within his relationship to Palpatine and his utter frustration at this new mess of a mechanical suit encasing him.
It also asks what the Jedi can do in the face of the New Order. Through the actions of a small band of refugee Jedi we see the panic they face without the Order to guide them. A learner takes point as their leader and makes decisions that bring a terrible price to Kashyyyk. The book also stays aware that each character is privy to only so much information about the galactic transformation. False assumptions are made by many characters throughout the story due to their limited points of view. Some groundwork is also laid for the relationships Artoo and Threepio, Tarkin and Vader, and Ben with the Lars family. This is a book that stimulates the reader to connect the dots between movie and book, and explains much minutiae seen in the OT. For those very interested in thinking about the situations just beyond the credits for Episode III, this book is thoroughly enjoyable. |

You make me want to read the first Star Wars book I've read since the original Zahn trilogy. Sounds cool!

That'd be Labyrinth of Evil. By the same author, James Luceno. These, and the novel for RotS, by Matthew Stover, make a nice trilogy unto themselves.

A new Series in the Star Wars Univers is rising. This new series looks very interesting and the firs volume will be available on May 30. Could this be the end of the New Republic?

Sabacc, you are right. Dark Lord: the Rise of Darth Vader is a really good book. I bought it as soon as it came out. Reading your recap/description on it makes me want to read it again. I read right through it in a couple of days. It is not a really long book. This time around I will take my time and savour it. I also like going into the database on SW.com and reading up on the characters meantioned in the books. This helps me get deeper insight into those characters.

Anyone ever read The Courtship of Princess Leia? I'm trying to confirm the value of the planet Han won Leia in that game of sabacc. I've seen reports of "around 3 billion credits", but if there's a more precise number I'd like to know.
Danke. |

Sorry we were of no help. I read the book over a decade ago and forgot the value of the bet.
from another thread, Walt wrote, Quote: SW.com recently had a feature about the book, Allegiance. |

Walter, you're the king of Star Wars paperbacks as far as I'm concerned, after your many Ebay buys. Remember I was telling you that a friend loved the character in I, Jedi? Corran Horn is the name and it turns out he's a major character from the X-Wing series of books that you also have.
For the rest of you, if anyone is looking for older SW books, you might check with Darthovsky- he's got quite a collection, including some dupes he might be looking to move. |

Campbell, you set me up for another ad for Best Used Books on International Drive (across from Burgerking, 2 blocks north of Kirkman). Not only can you get your free copy of "Into the Land of Magic" there, but you can find some of those Star Wars books there. They have good used book store prices, and they'll give you a great trade-in discount for your used books. I'm giving them some of those dupes and other random sci-fi books as a way of thanking them for making my script available for people to pick up. Don't quote me, but I think it works like this: You bring in your used books, they take them, and give you some amount of store credit for them. Then, whenever you purchase anything, you can use your store credit account to pay for up to 50% off their already low prices. So even if you bring in 30 books, you'd still have to pay at least a tiny bit if you wanted to buy anything. Otherwise, they'd have a CRAPLOAD of books, and soon go out of business, I'm sure.

Remember Dressing a Galaxy? Well here's Sculpting a Galaxy. This one's more up my alley, but cripes, $400 is out of this world- and my budget.
