I actually think learned as much as he did in ESB b/c Lucas really didn't have the though of a Jedi Academy or Temple in his mindset then. At that point in the series, all it may have taken was 2 months, or maybe even shorter. All of the building on jedi lore came after, so I don't think it's a case of Luke being the best or whatever...it was just in the script and more importantly, in Lucas' head at the time.

That is a good point. When Yoda is talking to Ben about training Luke. One of the only drawbacks, or excuses that Yoda is looking for to get out of it, is that he is too old. I know he says more in that scene but being too old stuck with me. So the Jedi lore as you put it came later; in novels, comics and the PT.

When Chewie and Han are captured at Bespin, Anakin Skywalker (D. Vader) has his brain transplanted in to the body of Chewbacca. Anakin's makeshift life support apparatus had been failing, he needed his brain stem to be integrated back into a living being. As his brain took root, he was able to fix Threepio. So, the Vader impersonator in ROTJ was just one of the emperor's loyal minions pretending to be Anakin Skywalker. Luke had no clue what his father looked like.
So... the rest of this story is continued in the ROTJ thread. |

In doing some research for the Toshi Station Trivia Trials I ran into this little "blooper" on Hoth. Remember the AT-AT Luke fells with his grenade? Check out the back right foot. You'll see the walker gets a push to help it fall. HA!
Heads up found in the book, The Unauthorized Nitpicker's Guide to SW. |

A black stick comes out of the snow and pushes that foot up. You especially can notice it if you look at the inexplicable angle taken by the back right foot during the fall.

I just watched the ESB DVD and I liked the movie more than ever before. It's funny to watch Threepio try so hard to blend in and hang with the humans. Campbell and I were just talking about how the movie ending with Lando in Han's Seat, wearing Han's clothing PLUS the fact that Han is a weak character in Jedi means that people were SERIOUSLY expecting that Harrison Ford would not be available for YET ANOTHER STAR WARS SEQUEL (remember, Star Wars kinda invented the notion of successful blockbuster sequels, so a sequel of a sequel was a big deal).
But mostly I wanted to acknowledge the cool 60 second single-shot scene between Leia and Han while they're in the cockpit of a Falcon that's hiding on the back of a Star Destroyer. It's very rare for a Hollywood film to have a single shot last for 60 seconds without cutting to a different shot. Most/many dialogue scenes between characters are just well edited blends of different takes. But many films will do single shot scenes to give the audience a nice breather between exciting sequences. The other obvious problem of single shot scenes with long exchanges of dialogue is that one screwup destroys the whole take. AND, screwups are more likely because the actors are at the mercy of each other's performance. I know alot of this stuff is basic film 101. Has anyone else been impressed by this single shot scene? |

Ha, that's a great one, most notable for featuring a glib Harrison Ford as narrator.

Making Love | #35 | ||
|
I just watched ESB- good movie.
Afterwards I put the commentary on random and just listened for a while. When Luke's getting his hand attached director Irvin Kirshner says, "I had them take a needle and stick it in the palm and on the fingers to have them twitch which said to the audience, 'Ah! He has feeling in them.' So it means he can make love, he can do things; he's a whole man again." I think it's hilarious, and unusually honest, that that was the first action Kirsh thought of as being the reason behind getting a working hand with feeling. |

I'm going to try and watch ESB in the next week or two. I haven't watched the SW movies that much in the last year so I'm going to try and watch
ESB on the 5th and 10th month of each year. Meaning I'll watch Jedi and Phantom Menace over the next two months.
If you're interested in taking up this practice, try to catch Empire this month and post it here. Potentially we could have renewed discussions on the movies by revisiting one per month. |

That's an interesting idea about watching a SW movie every month. I would also recommend if you have an HD DVR to record them all off HBO HD and
permanently save them. I have the directv hr10-250 (HD Tivo) at home with all 6 episodes saved in HD. It's very convenient that way and they look
fantastic in HD, especially the prequels. Maybe by the time my kids go to college they'll be released on blu-ray

I don't even have cable, but if I did, and I had a Tivo or similar, I'd do exactly that. Great idea.
