It began with Anakin in the cockpit saying, "This is where the fun begins." The line is now pretty familiar to all of us, but it didn't ring any bells with me other than that it might be a bad sign if a Jedi anticipates battle with glee. As I watched Episode IV tonight I was reminded that Han sardonically says almost the same line after blasting out of Mos Eisley, "Here's where the fun begins." Most of the little repeated motifs I'm very familiar with, but this one I'd completely missed. -Campbell

A father's spaceship captures a ship that happens to contain his daughter and his childhood hobby-droid, but none of them are aware of each other's presence. The father's son happens to be watching this all with binoculars from the planet below. And I'd just like to remind everyone how SCREWED Luke got. Twin Leia gets to be privileged royalty, and Luke gets shipped off to live on a desert planet as a humidity farmer!

Somewhere down the line we'd learn that Biggs is actually Mon Mothma (post clone brain switch) and the Lars Landspeeders were actually modified podracers.

Many authors had stories where robots and Artificial Intelligence was met with prejudice and discrimination. An old book, "Mission to the Stars", by A. E. Van Vogt has an eerily similar storyline to Star Wars. Here's a brief bit on it: vanvogt.www4.mmedia.is/mission.htm - The story includes battles among the stars. Star wars, if you will. It includes a prejudice against clones. I believe it included some kind of discovery of extra-human powers (like a weird version of The Force). One of the sides had developed something that might turn the war their way - the ability to destroy ENTIRE PLANETS! There were other Star Wars similarities, but I don't recall them all. Slan is another great book by A. E. Van Vogt, I recommend both highly. Don't be afraid of books just because they were written 50 years ago. That's when Starship Troopers was written by Heinlein :]

Regarding Han's use of the word parsec I'm used to the most-used excuse (the Run goes near some black holes so the boldest pilots can actually shave time and effort off their trip [while conversely increasing the risk] by taking a tighter route). That's one of my favorite things- having seen the flicks hundreds of times I always see something I've never noticed before. Then there's the good part about forgetting some of the stuff I've learned: there're so many SW factoids in my head that sometimes re-learning something can be as interesting as hearing it the first time. But this, I'm pretty sure was new. A little over an hour in, as TK-421 and his counterpart are lured into the Falcon's hold the second stormtrooper has a different belt on (you'll see it as he ascends the ramp). Aha! Had I found an inconsistency? These should be the armor uniforms worn later by our heroes, right? Apparently, Luke ended up wearing this belt, as it's missing the typical thermal detonator cylindar on the back. It's got what turns out to be the grappling hook and rope he later uses. With a fairly careful eye I can't see a shot where this was inconsistant. So I was happily schooled- even in the 70s this was right on. And speaking of the 70s. T-Bone from T-Bone's SWU has posted a knowing quote from Lucas found in Rolling Stone, May 1977, *Quote:* "I had a real problem because I was afraid that science-fiction buffs and everybody would say things like, 'You know there's no sound in outer space.' I just wanted to forget science. That would take care of itself. Stanley Kubrick made the ultimate science-fiction movie and it is going to be very hard for somebody to come along and make a better movie, as far as I'm concerned. I didn't want to make a 2001, 1 wanted to make a space fantasy that was more in the genre of Edgar Rice Burroughs; that whole other end of space fantasy that was there before science took it over in the Fifties. Once the atomic bomb came, everybody got into monsters and science and what would happen with this and what would happen with that. I think speculative fiction is very valid but they forgot the fairy tales and the dragons and Tolkien and all the real heroes."

Posts: 378 Fri, Jun 8, 2007 2:54 PM Okeechobee	Got a question to post: If you were going to introduce someone to the SW movies that has never seen them and really has had not interest in them, what would you start with: ANH or PM? I was thinking ANH, you know, go with the old ones and have the story with Luke, Darth and Leia develped then after that you can say, now here is how all of that came to be. But I can see the argument for starting with the PT, for someone who never has seen the OT, it will run more like one story starting with PM, AotC and ROTS. What do you think? A lot of young people prefer the digital effects of the prequels to the OT, and find them more engaging. The "first generation" fans are not the only big gang in town anymore. As for how I'd exhibit the Saga, I've wondered about that myself. I showed it to my wife thinking that, starting on Episode I, the movies would get better and better till RotJ. Amazingly, she liked I and II and VI. She didn't like Anakin in RotS and could not get into Luke Skywalker in IV and V. Strange, to my mind, but true.

The set up of AOTC, the altimate payoff of ROTS. Then to see Anikin paying for what he had done to his family and friends, to see his son for the first time, thinking he was dead. That would be cool. And does someone not like ROTJ?
