As some of you know, the EBKs from early this year have been showing up at Wal-marts again. Audrey asked on the TF.n board what an Early Bird Kit is. Here's my take:
They're found in the figures section, and I suspect we'll see them again throughout the Holiday Season. They underwhelmingly sold in April (horrible communication from Wal-mart to the public contributed) such that they've extended the time to sign up for this into 2006.
Do a quick search for them and you'll see the figures you get. Some would complain that they are not an impressive lot, but most of us knew exactly what we were getting as the collector sites showed them in March of this year.
EDIT: Changed the thread title to Hasbro / Kenner to encompass it all.

EBKs are plastic encased giant cardboard envelopes with a few stickers, a cardboard backdrop for the first 12 and most-importantly a certificate that you mail in for Hasbro to send you the "first" four figures from their new SAGA line. It's great for some of us, but to the average Wal-mart customer it didn't fly. It's a near-exact replica of a gimmick made by Kenner in 1977. Basically, the powers that be didn't think the movie would generate enough interest to support toys. By the time they realized it could, it was too late to develop and market toys and get them on shelves by Christmas 1977. In lieu of this, they sold this kit so parents could put something under the tree with a promise that 4 action figures would be in the mail early in 1978.
It's a story that collectors have heard for years and replicated in a pop-up exclusive Wal-mart and Hasbro pulled out of the hat this year for the April release of the RotS toys. -Campbell
ps- It costs $30 and the four figures are the same as the four offered the first time around: Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and R2-D2.
