Well, after I cut the fabric for my Imperial officer uniform a few weeks ago, I wound up not having any time to put it together. And now I wish I'd waited until after I'd seen the prequel officer in person at the FIDM exhibit! (Of course, at the time of cutting, I didn't know I was going to the exhibit...)


There are a few subtle differences between the prequel and original trilogy officer; ironically, most of them would have made the jacket *easier* to construct!
-Unmodified princess seam
-No chest pockets (and therefore no need for code cylinder props)
-Slight flare around the bottom, easier to fit a female body!

And some style differences:
-Horizontal seam across the chest
-Shoulder epaulets
-Collar closes on the side vs. center front
-Ribbon/trim around sleeve cuff

The fabric is more "tweedy" than what I've got, but I'm still considering recutting the jacket if I have enough fabric left after cutting the jodphurs (pants). Of course, then I'd also have to re-draft the cap, when I could stick with the original and use tkvanb's pattern.

The main attraction for me in the prequel vs. original costume? Something different! There's nothing flashy about this outfit and I was planning to make mine stand out from the run-of-the-mill by good construction and fabric choices. The prequel one is just different enough to be distinguishing on its own.

In any event, I won't have time to work on this until after the holidays, so I have plenty of time to mull it over!

Today, as mentioned in the FX events thread, I debuted my Sith Cheerleader costume. While I did not design or sew this costume, I did make the undershirt I wore with it: a black rib-knit crew-neck long sleeved T, which I injected with a little prequel style by creating super long sleeves that bunch at the wrist and partially cover my hands. This qualifies it to be mentioned in my costume thread. Did anyone notice that everyone in Trisha Biggar's prequel universe sports extra long sleeves under whatever tunics, dresses, cloaks or capes they are wearing? I decided it must be cold in that galaxy far, far away! Anyway, this was the first piece of clothing I put together almost entirely on my serger and I'm very pleased with it.

The last two weeks I've made pretty good progress on my Imperial Officer. I now have the shell put together except for the sleeves. Haven't updated the blog that far.

I also made my third costume sale, a Resident Evil flak vest, which you can see pics of in this post. I'm told there are 5-7 more RE clients lined up!

Finally, I picked up two 12" Amidala figures at FX today specifically for the detailed costumes. They'll go on display in my sewing room to inspire me.
