I watched Sicko a little while ago. I was waiting for this movie to finally come out as it seemed like ages ago that production began. For those that don't know, I am a director in the nation's 2nd largest insurance company. I'd be the first to say that we have a lot of things that are broken in healthcare today, so I wanted to see how Moore was able to frame the situation up.
I think the documentary comes across well, but Moore relies on some of his usual schtick, which is to say, it's kind of old or played out. I think there is a lot of meat in this film to chew on, but it could have been presented much better. Due to some of the direction or production, the story is a little padded along the way and certainly could have been crisper. I kind of got the feeling while watching the movie that I was editing my son's school essays. All that being said, the movie is worth watching with an open mind. Moore does capture the spirit of one of the nation's biggest issues at hand, but does a little card stacking in the process (as usual). I recommend the film and give it 4/5 stars. |

Thanks for mentioning that. I had planned on staying away from it due to my distaste for Fahrenheit 911. My problem is not with his opinions- I tend to agree with him on lots of issues- it's that he's so damn one-sided. He's so manipulative with his editing and content that I never feel like I'm getting the full story. And that makes me want to stay away altogether.

I actually loved Fahrenheit 911, even considering I was in the WTC only a few minutes before the first plane hit. I thought the picture that Moore painted in 911 was stacked in one direction, but I'm not sure how much more to the story was actually available to tell.
I think you still owe it to yourself to see Sicko as the healthcare industry is in crisis, and this movie is an eye opener for many that choose to not 'hear' about the issue. Ignorance is bliss, but for those that don't have a good understanding of the issue, this movie does well in explaining our situation. |

Mike Moore is a peice of garbage that needs to keep his hitler propoganda to his self. He wants to educate people on the world, and make a quick buck off the misery of others. The health care in this country is not the best run. The law in this country lets people sue for what ever. That helps drive the price up. Also there are to many people here with there hand out wanting stuff for free. I say to Mr. Moore, If you dont like it get the f&^k out.

Anthony - we are talking about Sicko. Moore's previous movie before Sicko was F9/11.
I understand that some folks don't like Michael Moore. And, let me be understood here - I am a conservative republican. That being said, Moore should be my enemy, right? Wrong...folks need to look at information that they are given with an open mind to form their own opinions. If we were to run around bashing someone b/c they spoke their viewpoint, wouldn't that view be more anti-American than Moore outlaying information on what he feels can be improved in the country? This is a debate that could go on forever, and I toyed with not putting up my review of the movie. The bottom line is this: America has a lot of problems - not a unique situation as every country has problems. However, health care coverage is a huge problem for the country. I work in health care. I can tell you that the way that the health care system works today will eventually leave America bankrupt with citizens not able to obtain a simple doctor's visit for medicine. Imagine having a child sick and b/c you make 'too much money' for a govt program like Medicare/Medicaid and too little money for private insurance, that child dies b/c of a high fever or a mild infection. This problem simply should not exist. The fact that Moore put this movie out there and shows what is driving this problem (corporate run healthcare), he should be applauded. After watching the movie with an open mind, you should then be able to make a judgement call on the topic - not the man that made the movie himself. Again, Sicko the movie - 4/5 stars. Sicko the director's general left wing views - 1/5 stars. |

Well said, Kyle.
There was once a group of people who didn't like how things were run . . . and they kicked the British out of here to change things for the better. There was once another group of people who didn't like how things were run . . . and they abolished slavery and fought a very bloody war to keep this country united. There was once another group people who didn't like how things were run and women got the right to vote. Blacks got the right to exist equally with whites. Women got the right to choose. Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. What makes our country unique is the fact that people don't have to shut up and sit down when the majority says so. Not everyone will agree on everything, but telling someone "If you don't like it, get out" is the most un-American statement you can make, IMO. If everyone did that, we'd all be having tea and crumpets everyday and/or whipping slaves and/or having a large child labor force and bla bla bla bla bla. I root for the little guy because it's the little guys that keep things in check. /rant |

Interesting conversation, and I don't say that lightly.
Kyle, I often come from an opposing viewpoint politically, but I appreciate your opinion mostly because of your experience in health care. I suspect I'll get annoyed by Moore at times, but I'll see Sicko because I really don't have a handle on the problems. |

My view also comes from somebody that did do for his country. Like the USMC. I am just tired of the celebs in this country and for that matter, the cool kids bashing
"The Man". MM is just a pig that is trying to make a quick buck. He will never see a dime from me. And if someone is sick and the medical bills are to much, thats bad. But do we need a reminder of it form some rich fat guy, no. Life sucks, get a hemlet! |

I absolutely don't think Michael Moore is in it for a quick buck. I think he is an extremely self-righteous guy that likes the spotlight. He starts off with the right intentions, but his character flaws undermine his points in my opinion. Still, I plan on seeing Sicko eventually. And I think it's 100% kosher if you or anybody else decides not to.

I watched "Shooter" tonight on dvd. This is a movie in the mold of the "Bourne" series. I thought it came across as kind of a K-Mart production with a few great spots. I am a sucker for these types of action movies and this had the makings of a movie that could have been just as good as the Bourne series but just felt like the script/direction had a 'ahhh...this is good enough' reaction while making the movie.
Marky Mark is a poor man's Matt Damon but does hold his own. The action scenes were maybe a 3/5 for me, the dialogue scenes maybe a 2/5, and the love interest scenes were a 1/5 at best. Still...worth a shot if there isn't much else to watch on dvd. Overall...2 1/2 stars out of 5. Next up...Transformers on Tuesday night. |

Just My Luck | #14 | ||
|
Kyle, funny review of Shooter. I don't think it's my cup of tea, but I like it being described as a K-Mart production. Vic, I'm curious about Die Hard 4/LFoDH but I imagine that I'll wait for video. I think the first one is a classic, the second one blew, and the third one was pretty good in a "Last Crusade" kind of way*.
I saw, and I can't believe I'm saying this, Just My Luck starring Lindsey Lohan. It was the worst flick I've seen this year. Lohan's character loses her lifelong lucky streak and through her own stupidity she makes all sorts of mistakes. She's downright unlikable at many points so I found this to be a tedious watch. Scary to imagine slumber parties of girls ages 11-13 might one day look on this as their Sixteen Candles. * brings in new partners, plays on the theme of the first movie... |

I also meant to add that Altamonte AMC had the mystery trailer before Transformers for the JJ Abrams "Cloverfield" (working title) movie that is due out 1/18/08. The trailer looks awesome and the movie looks like it is due to be fantastic.
Here is a link to the background on the mystery trailer: www.slashfilm.com/2007/06...nsformers/ And, here is a bootleg trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NNxPcgn_Dk |

Knocked Up
I wager most anyone who wanted to see this movie has by now, but I'm a little late to the party. This movie was written and directed by Judd Apatow, he of Freaks & Geeks and The 40 Year Old Virgin fame. I think if you enjoyed those projects, or even films like There's Something About Mary and Wedding Crashers, you'll like Knocked Up. It's full of raunchy comedy and a few did-they-really-just-show-that moments, but it has a lot of heart. The characters are very real, if not slightly exaggerated, and while the movie isn't exactly a laugh a minute and is about 15 minutes too long, it's fun enough to overcome its handful of faults. Not quite as good as TFYOV in my opinion, but still a good movie. 4/5 stars Live Free or Die Hard I was only looking forward to 4 films this summer and now I've seen 3 of them. I was disappointed in Spider-man 3, Knocked Up was good, but not great, and then there's the 4th installment in the Die Hard series. LFODH took a little getting used to in the beginning. It didn't seem too Die Hardy for the first 20 minutes or so. Computer terrorists are wreaking havoc with the traffic, financial, and information systems of the country. John McClane has definitely aged, but rather than playing that angle up, he just seems like a seasoned veteran of this kind of action hero stuff and comes off more superhero than regular guy caught in irregular circumstances. The stunts in this movie were pretty amazing, yet pushing believability at times. I really had to suspend my disbelief at times to keep rolling with the movie, but my g/f had more trouble doing that and pretty much thought the movie was dumb. I am a HUGE fan of the first Die Hard movie and that allowed me to tolerate the sequels. DH2 was a little over the top (much like this movie) and DH3 had some wacked out stunt moments (much like this movie). While there were some nods to the original film in LFODH, ultimately I think this movie was a misfire. It focused too much on the crazy action and not enough on what makes John McClane John McClane. This could have been any movie, really. A guy named John McClane just happened to be in it. As a popcorn movie diversion in the peak of summer: ****/5 stars As a Die Hard movie: ***/5 stars I'm a sucker, so I'll get it on DVD when it comes out, but nothing can top the original. |

ketchup / The Thai Who Loved Me | #19 | ||
|
Man, I haven't checked in here in a couple of days, but you can really tell the Summer movies are out and exciting people.
I've yet to see Knocked Up, but that, Fantastic Four 2, Ocean's Thirteen, and Transformers are on my to-see list. This is an interesting idea, Justin: Quote:I can't say whether there will be or there won't be, but it sounds slightly refreshing that a blockbuster would not be eyeing a three-peat, or at least a part II. I'm not an old school fan of the Transformers, so I don't think I'll want for a saga, but seeing the trailers and hearing all your reviews certainly makes me look forward to it. What I did see was some old DVDs. Namely, the 10th James Bond movie, The Spy Who Loved Me, starring Roger Moore. I have often written off the Moore vehicles, and I don't have too much more interest in them now. There is a good bit of comedy in them, which for me is a bit of a letdown from Connery and even Lazenby. The villain was completely two-dimensional, and along with Blofeld, from other Bond outings, inspired Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers movies. The most interesting part for this crowd might be in the first moments inside a submarine. Boba Fett himself, Jeremy Bullock, is a crewmember playing chess. It's a really minor part, but it's cool to see the guy on film instead of at Star Wars Weekends. During Moore's commentary in that segment, he mentions that he and Bullock were old aquaintances that had enjoyed working together on previous projects. He also said that Bullock had gone on to play roles in several other James Bond movies. The only other movie I've seen recently is Ong Bak, The Thai Warrior, which plays like an updated version of Jackie Chan movies from that actor's heyday. I found the movie to be pretty fun. The story of a farmboy going to the big city to save a sacred relic from his village was not overly original, but it was enough to hang all the action on. There are no wires in this movie, but lots of flying. The stunts are replayed two and three times from different angles to let you know how good they are and that they are done by the actors, not stunt performers. If this is something you appreciate, this is a good movie. I view it less as a drama, and more like a circus performance with a story. In that perspective, the movie's a success. |
