Me, I've enjoyed just about everything I've seen from the new version, bu the original will always be closest to my heart. For those of us that watched it in the days of only three channels (maybe four if PBS was getting good reception) it was the closest thing to Star Wars on TV. By the powers of the public library I've been able to recently re-absorb the "complete epic series" and for the nostalgic, it really pays off.
It's amazing how many similarities there are to Star Wars, and not just in the direction everyone would expect. I don't know if there was a spy from The Empire Strikes Back on the set of BG, but a examples of these similarities happen on the episode, "The Gun on Ice Planet Zero." It's about the Cylons who have a superlaser weapon on an ice planet that shoots into space. Shot for shot it looks like SW (check out when a hand of a speaker points out weaknesses of the superlaser, saying, "Here, and here."
Rigel, a character that should be in Echo Base has Leia Bespin hair, and coldweather coats worn by Colonial Warriors are very similar to Han's. There's a countdown leading to the enemy gun exploding almost exactly like end of ANH and the story also features Clones and their creator (Blade Runner-like).
Other episodes have even more little odd moments, but it should come as no surprise. The used universe of BG was designed by Ralph McQuarrie with special effects by John Dykstra. The Vipers look directly related to X-Wings, complete with orange stripes and welded hulls, and it could be argued that the Cylon Raiders look like TIE wings flown by silver and black stormtroopers with snowtrooper skirts and Kaminoan clone helmets.
It's all pretty interesting and I've even seen scenes that look like Raiders of the Lost Ark (which came out 2 years later). Worth a look. -Campbell
EDIT: changed the title to include the current series, Caprica.
