Red Tails |

I was reading Hyperspace today where there's an article from the Lucasfilm Fan Club Magazine from 1990 about Red Tails. A look at IMDb lists the movie (about the Tuskeegee Airmen) slated for 2008, despite the articles assertion that it should be released in 1992.

Last week at SWW I had the good fortune to ask Rick McCallum about Red Tails. He said pre-production was a go and a script will be readied this Summer.
However, Anthony's right to doubt it's close at hand- I recall reading in a couple of biographies that Lucas has been working on this project for 20+ years. I know Radioland Murders was kicked around in the early 70s and took till the 90s to come out. |

Anybody know the latest on Lucas's Red Tails? At CIV I had a chance to speak with Gary Kurtz about it. He confirmed that this was a story that Lucas had
been talking about for years. I also asked Rick McCallum about it at SWW 2007 where he said it was on track to start filming in late 2008 or 2009.

Pre-production continues. Not only has director Anthony Hemingway been announced to direct, but several castmembers have been announced according to the
Hollywood Reporter.
In Anthony Hemingway's "Red Tails," [Rick Otto] will play a white World War II piot who is sympathetic to the African-American squadron known as the Tuskegee Airmen. George Lucas is producing for his Lucasfilm. [90210 star] Tristan Wilds has been cast in the World War II drama "Red Tails." Here's the IMDb page. |

That sounds great and all, but I would much rather George and Rick put their talents to use and make Episodes VII, VIII & IX.

Well, anything can happen, but George has stated he's done making Star Wars movies. I'm okay with that personally. I actually really enjoy Clone Wars,
but we are undoubtedly diluting the mystique of Star Wars by having it constantly on tap. I remember being so impressed that Star Wars, with dozens of hours of
plot (even if you include the 80s cartoon series and made for TV movies) was just as popular as Star Trek with thousands. The more hours of plot weaving in and
out of the Star Wars universe, the less impact each one has.
That's really not addressing the movie issue, though. Who knows? Lucas has back-tracked on so many claims about his intentions. Plus Hamill would easily be on board for more Skywalking. I imagine Carrie Fisher would do it, as would tons of support players including Anthony Daniels. Ford would be the toughest nut to crack, but with his lack of hits in the last decade, IJ notwithstanding, he might be tempted back. |

They better hurry if they want to make more Star Wars movies, everyone is getting old !
I remember hearing about Red Tails around the time Jedi came out. George doesn't rush to do things. I guess he has so much cash he doesn't have to. |

Principle photography completed | #9 | ||
|
A very interesting blog entry
confirms that principle photography for Red Tails has been completed.
Lucasfilm had just finished principle photography on "Red Tails", a WWII film about an African American fighter squadron. They filmed this in Prague and needed to film pick ups early next year. Much of this was going to be intimate in cockpit stuff and flying shots. They shot the movie on the Sony F35 but this is a beast and utterly impractical for the cockpit stuff. Hence the Canon DSLRs. They were also looking at new ways to shoot the much anticipated "Star Wars" live action TV series. -Campbell Help the SWGFA by buying through Amazon. |

Here's a good article on the Tuskegee Airman. Interestingly, it's set during a reunion of the Red Tail pilots last month here in Orlando.

I actually knew one of the airmen, he went to our Church! Hopefully we'll see the move take flight soon enough, and George will let someone else write the dialog.

If you listen to The ForceCast or follow Rick McCallum, you likely have heard that Red Tails is now slated for a January 2012 release. It'll come out on Martin Luther King Day weekend.

So not only is the trailer out for the movie, but at the SWGFA's Summer Outing we got to see a restored P-51 "Red Tail" plane both in the hangar and flying around at Fantasy of Flight.
