Jessie, I am glad that you are starting your gardening thread again. I found the old one to be helpful and you gave us some good tips on growing things. Good Luck with your "younglings" this winter. See ya later

I'm glad, too. I only grow aloe, but it's always good to see somebody cultivating life.

Christmas is over | #6 | ||
|
Jessie, what can I do with my potted poinsettias now that Christmas is over? We used to have them in our backyard years ago, I know they'll grow around here. But I don't want them to take over or anything (are they like that?), and I don't know where to plant them, if they need sun or shade, etc. If I don't decide what to do soon, they will die of neglect on my front porch. Help them, Tai Lin Yodathumb; you're their only hope!

If the poinsettias are in a good size pot you can either bring them in the house and put them in a sunny location or you can bring them to the back where they'll get sun but, not alot of cold breezes or extreme heat.
But definitely leave them in the pots because when it gets to be fall again (like October) bring them in and put them in a closet for 14-16 hours a day (the rest of the time they can get sun). This will encourage them to "bloom" again and produce those pretty red leaves. You'll have to do this for about 3 weeks. When you start seeing the red leaves budding out, then place the plants back in their sunny place full-time and they'll grow beautifully again. They'll need a good watering twice a week (or when soil is dry to the touch) and fertilizer once a month (12-12-12 or higher) |

We had some poinsettias that were potted but then my father planted them behind the house. It was in an area, like Jessie said, where the house was blocking the wind and they were getting just the right amount of sunlight. They took off and grew the a pretty good height and became a beautiful plant. Then Hurrincane Wilma came and messed them up. Still planted and growing but were bent over and did not have the red leaves as much this year. So you can leave them potted or if the contidions are just right, you can plan them outside. I know Jessie is the Green Thumb of the board but I thought I would throw in my two cents

Re: I love my "pot" | #10 | ||

Last week I almost threw away my nasty looking plastic pots. So, I decided to paint them. They turned out pretty nice I think. And it was so easy to do! I got some acrylic paints, a kitchen sponge and a small bucket of water and went crazy. So, if you have any old pots, think about splashing on some color first

Ooh, I love the red pot!
Thanks for the poinsettia tips. If I don't plan them they will probably die, b/c I won't remember to water them. But at the moment they seem okay, so we'll see! |

Audtoo, if you plant them in the summer, they should get enough water to help and take care of them. I know how it is though to forget to water plants. I don't know how many bonsai trees I have tried to grow and they just die on me.

Hey guys and gals!
February is the time to prune bushes and trees. Spring will be creeping up on us soon. And while our jolly greens are still in their dormant state, it's a good time to trip them back. This will prepare them for their new growth. And by the way, I have a garden blog going on that ya'll need to check out. It doesn't mean I won't post here though. tai-lin-garden.blogspot.com/ |

Jessie, your new blog is beautiful! If you don't want to cross post, you can always just alert us here whenever you update it, so we know to go look. And we can still post our questions to you here (blogspot doesn't really provide a good way to do that).

Kewl site
The aussie ferns I always thought were cool but they are kinda big for ferns. but how they're "born" I always likened too a butterfly opening their antennae the first time. If you've ever seen one emerge from the chrysalis it's almost fascinating......I say almost cause it can be a slow process. Awesome...... |

I've been moved to an 'Other' spot! Oh, no!
It's all good! Thanks Russ! Yeah, the aussie ferns grow to be 30 feet tall in the forest. Mines still a baby, only 2 feet tall [Admin's response: sorry for the unscheduled relocation, the topic just fit better into 'general' General Discussion than OS Discussion.] |
