Anakin when the Ewoks sing |
Lead | ||

In 2004, George Lucas changed the face of Anakin's spirit figure as he, Yoda, and Obi-Wan look on Luke and the rest of the heroes. Which version do you prefer?

The ending never sat right with me no matter the version, but as it stands now, the original ending makes the most sense and is the most satisfying conclusion. The Anakin in the new ending is too young and it seems like the Vader years never happened. That doesn't sit right with me. If they put Hayden in some age makeup to make him more the age he should be at the time of his death (instead of pushing 60 or whatever) I might be able to swallow it easier. But then, what do you do with the unmasking scene? I guess that'd have to be redone as well.
Anyway, I'm voting for the original ending for simplicity's sake. |

I vote for spirit of Episode 1 Anakin.
Ha Ha ...............................Ha Ha Ha If it's a younger Anakin then it should be a younger Obi-Wan. |

I never had an issue with Anakin the way he was till they made the change. Once it was rumored, I started to put together how inexplicable it was that old Anakin would be ghosting it up. How does he have hair? Midichlorians do that? Where'd the big guy get the robes? Did he get suited up in Jedi heaven? Suddenly it clicked for me how arbitrary it was to have Sebastian Shaw in there. In terms of 1983 it worked for me, but now that there are Prequels, I prefer the notion that Anakin was lost when he renounced the Jedi Knights. His redemption brought him back.
Thus, I'm happiest with the new version. |

What do you mean by "lost"? And who do you think Luke was appealing to in TESB and ROTJ? Vader and Anakin are not two different people!

The way I see it they look as they do when they leave their corporal bodies and join one with the force, so I do think it should have been the older Anakin (Sebastion Shaw figure) Though I do think he should have looked more as the disfigured redeemed Anakin when he died I can kind of right it off that's how he would have looked if he never turned. I can only explain the jedi robes as an unfortunate problem of timing of the films, that is how all jedi were apparently envisioned at the time and they look fine with the young ani's head on them.

Quote:Not from my point of view. I believe a fundamental change happened when Anakin joined the Emperor after Windu's demise. I think that Palpatine cultivated the darkness in Anakin, but I believe the renaming of a Sith signifies a profound difference in their worldview. I believe that distraught lonely man that Vader became was significantly set apart from the boy we saw in Episodes I and II. I get your point. I'm definitely being figurative about this. But how are we seeing the Jedi spirits? It's a storytelling device and I think it's more effective showing the Anakin that we know and not old man dying-Vader. In fact, I was a little disapointed to see Sebastian Shaw still under the helmet in the 2004 editions. I'd rather see Hayden in prosthetics there, but I also see the reason you would not want to lose the iconic performance the RotJ crowd remembers. |

It's not much of a redemption if Anakin was out to lunch for the bulk of the CT, that's all I'm saying.

I agree with Russ in that I always thought it was them when they died. Obi-wan was Alec Guiness and you can't really tell with Yoda. The Jedi robes were a testament to the fact that Vader had been a Jedi and redeemed himself at the end. That's my story and I'm sticking with it!

I've been thinking about this issue since the old Anakin action figure came out in about 1996. He included a lightsaber which just brought it to the forefront that this guy totally was not Darth Vader. I guess I'm lucky that the current Special Editions have the Hayden ghost, my preference.

Just because you think Hayden Christensen is hotter than Sebastian Shaw is no reason to vote for him, Campbell!

Return of the Jedi took place only 23 years after episode 3 and Anakin was only 22 (he was 19 in attack of the clones and revenge of the sith is 3 years later) so he would only be 46
