Do you have a cell phone? What carrier do you use? Are you happy with them?

In research terms, this question is a bad design. You asked three questions, and only provided answers for the first two. "Are you happy with them?" is a third question. To keep this as a single-question poll, you would have to provide additional answers such as:
Yes, Cingular, yes Yes, Cingular, no Then of course if you wanted people to indicate their level of happiness with their service, you would have to make it more of a Likert scale: Yes, Cingular, very unhappy Yes, Cingular, somewhat unhappy Yes, Cingular, neutral Yes, Cingular, somewhat happy Yes, Cingular, very happy A better survey design would be three questions. (1) Do you have a cel phone? Check yes (go on to question 2) or no (skip to the end). (2) What carrier? Check from the list below. (3) How happy are you with your service (Likert scale). The wisdom of my one semester of graduate level research techniques, twelve years ago... [duck] |

You make an excellent point, and I did recognize the simplicity of the options. Unfortunately, I was working in the limitations of an ezBoard poll, where you get a maximum of 5 choices (yuck). The other questions were to spurn discussion below. I also know how little interest the polls have garnered so far so I didn't want to make a project out of it. That said, I totally agree with what you said.

Susan, I know there are bootleg ringtones out there. I recall one of our members last year finding a person that would actually convert any sound you wanted into a ringtone for free.

I have learned to make my own ringtones for my sprint phone. Anyone on Sprint I can help out.
And Campbell, I was being funny. |

Cingular, mostly yes, lucked into it being the approved company for SW ringtones as I had same company before as BellSouth.

It's not too often that I find my philosophy is verbalized by Harrison Ford, but here's one time. In the February issue of Details magazine he's asked, "Isn't it nice to be able to talk to your girlfriend at any time? No one is ever out of reach."
Ford responded, People should be out of reach. People don't need you as much as they think they do. I get by on less communication than most people are comfortable with." |

I got my phone mostly for safety purposes because I travel a lot. It's handy to have at other times but can be a pain too. Of course, like the television, it does have an "off" button! Good perspective though. I see people walking and driving with them and not paying attention to where they are going...

I have my phone mostly for just-in-case purposes, too. I hardly chat on it, preferring to take a minute to set up a meet so we can talk in person than to waste away my minutes.

Actually I quite agree with Mr. Ford though obviously with the traveling I do I kinda need mine. I still don't talk on the phone that much as anyone I want to talk to I'd always prefer in person.

Cingular prepaid. At least Cin to Cin is free but charge a buck for first call per day.

Audrey, as of tomorrow, I'll have a Sprint cellphone. Bizarre as it sounds, my best friend couldn't take it anymore and added me to his plan. For less than the price of a monthly $20 bill I'll have a phone when I'm out and about.

Cell's bells | #16 | ||

So I'm entrenched into the mobile phone mindset. I have foolishly driven while talking on it, and I've made plenty of unnecessary calls from it, but I have maintained some of my manners. I don't talk while I'm checking out at the grocery, I don't speak loudly as if the world needs to know what I'm talking about, and most importantly, I don't interrupt a conversation with a person in my presence by taking a call unless I sincerely clear it with that person.
This month I'm most likely going to take the dive and sign up for my own plan. Not positive which carrier I'll use but Sprint has been good to me. I have a need for a family plan, so I'll be looking for deals in the next few weeks. |

Re: Cell's bells | #17 | ||

Look for ones that have what you want and don't make you pay for features you don't (obviously). For example I expanded my plan to more minutes than I really use because it gave me free roaming. If I go on vacation out of state two or three times a year, the roaming charges were costing me more than the upgraded plan. If you won't be traveling outside of Florida much, see if you can get a regional plan or a state-wide plan.

Re: Cell's bells | #18 | ||

Thanks for the thoughts. I went to the Sprint store yesterday with my friend whose account I ride. I found out a) I can receive text messages for a very reasonable fee so I can drop my work pager, and b) if I want to cancel before his 18-month plan ends I have to pay $150. Makes sense, like most cancellation penalties, but I haven't decided the proper etiquette with my friend. I'd like to get a plan with Pin (her's just ended and she's temporarily without a mobile) and the only reason I am on my buddy's plan is because he was frustrated that I didn't have a cell phone and signed me up. He gave me a super deal so I might stay on it and not even join with Pin, but then I'd find myself alone in the woods in a year and a half while Pin's in the middle of her own plan.
So should I bite the bullet and just pay the $150? Is it my responsibility? I never asked for a phone or even implied that I wanted one. However, I've really enjoyed it and he's charging me probably half of what it would cost for me to have my own singular plan. |

Re: Cell's bells | #19 | ||

You could always just stay on your friends plan until the contract is up and then join Pin's plan. Cell phone companies never object to adding people, and if you let the contract expire, there won't be any charge to changing the plan.

Yeah, adding people is never a problem. It's the dropping the companies don't like.
